One of the many major problems with "gun control"--beyond the fact that it is an attempt to regulate by law the behavior of the lawless--is that it is based on denying people access to centuries-old technology. Just how many centuries, of course, depends on what level of firearms technology we're talking about, but even metallic cartridges, smokeless powder, and semi- and fully-automatic weapons have been around for well over a hundred years--and New York City mayor (and Mayors Against Illegal Guns founder) Mike Bloomberg wants oppressive control over weapons far more primitive than those (flintlock technology dates back around four centuries). Suffice it to say that even if laws were passed that prevented all private commerce in firearms, and these laws were (somehow) successfully enforced, one need not be a mechanical or engjneering genius to build one's own.
This is something we have talked about before. The receiver of a firearm, which for legal purposes is the firearm, is the part that is required to have a serial number, and sales of which are subject to a federally mandated background check. Some enterprising small companies and individuals manufacture incomplete receivers, that still require a small amount of machining before they can be used in the construction of a functional firearm. That being the case, these incomplete receivers can be legally bought and sold without any controls at all.
According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), 80 percent complete is the cut-off point between inert hunk of metal (or whatever other material), not subject to any federal law; and "gun," subject to the entire array of infringements on that which shall not be infringed.

“Due to forces of technology (CNC controlled machine tools, cheap computation, open source ethics, and social sharing of designs) gun control is utterly dead.
The death of “gun control,” and with it, the government monopoly on force, so beloved of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV). Good riddance.”
Sounds great to me.
Impressive. I want one of those 3-dimensional printers.
That’s the problem. A little bit of tyranny isn’t going to control unlawful gun ownership and a lot won’t do it either.
Thanks to computers, machining tools aren’t that expensive either.
It is articles like this one that always make me laugh at the stupidity of those that would try to suppress an individual’s right to defend one’s self. Then, I have to remind myself that politicians are mostly lawyers that couldn’t make it the real world of lawyerdom...bottom dwellers basically. Lowest of the low. They get their rocks off by trying to “control” others that are not failures like they are....some things you just can’t control...especially if its just a “block of metal or plastic”. Stupidity oozes out of them like slimy juice out of a rotten tomato. Then along comes some guy like Herman Cain......he scares the poop outta them because he’s not a failed lawyer like they are!!! Just that fact alone is enough to garner my vote...LOL.
I though with the headline that they were announcing the invention of the phaser.
Guns are easier to make than drugs. Any halfway decent home machine shop could make one of the same quality as the peacemaker or better.
