SAN DIEGO (CBS) Union and trucking industry leaders joined a pair of Southland lawmakers on Wednesday to warn Americans about a potential economic fallout if Mexican trucks are allowed to travel unchecked across the border.
Reps. Bob Filner (D-San Diego), and Duncan D. Hunter (R-El Cajon) joined James Hoffa of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Todd Spencer, the owner-operator of the Independent Drivers Association, to voice their concerns over the bilateral pilot project that is set to roll into the U.S. interior within days.
The bipartisan group argues that allowing Mexican trucking companies to travel into the U.S. to deliver the goods rather than transfer them will put American jobs and highway safety at risk.

Transportes Olympic was the first Mexican trucking company to be approved under the program last week as part of the North American Free Trade Agreement. It looks like libs are finally getting alarmed about the invasion, too. I note that is a provision of NAFTA, proposed by Bush41 and ratified by Clinton/Gore.

Bob Filner and Duncan D. Hunter, that is an odd couple. Filner is red diaper baby Marxist to the core. Hunter is a Reaganite.

In reality, democrats have always hated truckers, even teamster truckers. I think it’s because they are independent souls who want to be left alone.
This invasion of mexican trucks proves it.
So does the price of diesel in my mind that did not drop recently as gasoline dropped about 60 cents a gallon.
Can politicians affect pump prices? Sure they can. And they do for consumers, so why not for one of the “union constituencies?”
I think the dem establishment has always, down deep hated truckers.

Yeah, I think this is Hunter Jr.
Of course, the resident expert on all things Hunter no longer posts at FR, so we’re on our own.
:)
To: FritzG
Yes. Duncan D. Hunter’s father is Duncan Hunter. The father represented the same district east of San Diego.

I said when Bob Dole and Bill Clinton stood side by side and praised the passage of NAFTA, it can’t be good for us.
I have to remember what Perot said. If it’s not good for the U.S., we don’t need to pass it. I don’t see where allowing Mexican trucks to drive into this country is good for the U.S. As for driving our trucks into Mexico, our truckers aren’t that stupid.

I thought it was already happening. Rick Perry was bitching that Mexican trucks should be allowed greater access over 10 years ago, and I figured it had already been put into place:

The fruits of NAFTA have just begun to ripen. At the same time, we must not allow the roots of the tree to become poisoned. The NAFTA agreement not only signaled a new era of economic possibility, but a new era of bi-national cooperation. That is why it is wrong, and inherently detrimental to our relationship with Mexico for the U.S. Congress to pursue a protectionist policy that forbids Mexican trucks from U.S. roadways. It is bad public policy, and it violates the terms of the NAFTA agreement we agreed to. Mexican trucks that meet our safety standards should be given the same access to U.S. roads as our Canadian neighbors to the north.

I agree. Having Mexican trucks in this country is beyond stupid. It’s nice to see that both the left and the right seem to recognize the error in this policy.

Ron Paul is absolutely correct on this issue. We don’t have free trade, we have Government-Managed trade.
I just pray the fix is not already in.
