Many childhood cancers are basically stem cell cancers. The “primitive” cells don't differentiate into adult cells and instead mutate into cancer.

A cell that fails to differentiate is by definition “cancer.” There is no need for mutation; in fact mutation implies a differentiation has taken place. (Trophoblast Theory)
