Recapping the GOP debate: Mitt's snit, Cain's crash, Perry's push
Los Angeles Times ^ | October 19, 2011 | James Oliphant, Robin Abcarian, Kim Geiger and Michael A. Memoli

Whew. Can you have a debate in which nobody wins?

The seven Republican presidential candidates on the stage during the GOP debate in Las Vegas Tuesday slapped, swatted, slashed, jabbed, picked, and poked at each other for two hours. As might be expected, most of the emerged bloodier and more ragged than when they walked in.

But then, these things are contests—largely political sporting events. So if a winner must be crowned, make it Rick Perry, who showed some fire in his willingness to go toe-to-toe with Mitt Romney, whose aura of inevitability waxed and waned during the debate. Perry was just about the only candidate who has reason to smile today.

Romney, under attack for most of night not only from Perry but from the likes of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, was at times peevish and other times rattled, particularly on the subject of immigration. At one point, Romney lost his cool and touched Perry on the shoulder as he was interrupted....

[skipping to my favorite part -- the LA Times likes it too and printed a partial transcript]

Romney went on to lecture Perry on debate etiquette: "You have a problem with allowing someone to finish speaking," he said. "And I suggest that if you want to become president of the United States, you got to let both people speak."

Back to the immigration issue, Romney got candid: "So we went to the company and we said, look, you can't have any illegals working on our property. That's -- I'm running for office, for Pete's sake, I can't have illegals. It turns out that once again they hired someone who had falsified their documents -- and therefore we fired them."

If funds come, it will mean he is viable.

Perry called for the abolition of the EPA before anyone else. He’s seen how that agency has hurt Texas and the whole country.

Step Four: When some bozo from the rabble-rouser list posts their usual Democrat talking points that are unrelated to anything you have posted, skip over said reply and don’t bother engaging. Total waste of bandwidth.

Thank you alicewonders. I appreciate and respect your opinion. It will be interesting to see what transpires, especially when candidates begin to drop out. Looking back to 2008 Romney benefited from Rudy Giuliani's demise. Even so, he never rose above the 24.6% mark. He had and still has 25% of the vote locked up, which means 75% do/did not support him. I don't think that will change this time around and I think that will make it easy for Cain to defeat him.

You forgot step Four:

Call them a liar and the cowardly refuse to respond when they challenge you to provide proof they have ever lied.

Your MO to a tee!

It’s hard as heck at first, huh? You have accidents, and fall off the wagon, but climb back on. It’s either that or leave FR. Not gonna happen ‘til we’re thrown out.

LOL you are the one trolling her thread. You don’t like the topic, don’t respond. Better yet, start your own threads for the candidate you do like.

If people didn’t post articles on this forum then it would be nonexistent.

Could somebody explain to me how tryng to strike an air of being above the fracas, being mostly ignored, while looking old and fat makes somebody come off looking better on TV to the vast pool of voters?

To me, Newt seemed in control of his emotions more so than the others (especially Romney, Perry and Santorum). I also believe his answers were more concise and thoughtful.

I never said anything about a "vast pool of voters". I don't believe Newt is electable because of his personal baggage, but that doesn't change my view of how he did in last night's debate.

Somebody DID win.

Newt.

Yes he did, but he has too much baggage. Him and pig lousy on that couch comes to mind. I do think he would make 0 look like a whooped kid in a debate.

Thanks for that reasonable response. I agree Gingrich did come across as the thoughtful one, not engaging in the lively and sometimes petty exchanges the others engaged in, but bottom-line, not a one of those people last night stand a chance next November with the demographics in this country now.

Cain has not attacked anyone - Romney, Perry,

Um, Cain Says He Would Not Support Perry As GOP Nominee

Cain Calls Perry “Just Plain Insensitive To Black Folks”

I'll grant, though, that Cain has not really attacked Romney.

You seem to have extended his ‘insensitive’ comment with: ‘to black folks’.

Not supporting someone is a statement - not an attack.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh you really need remedial reading.

Oh boo hoo hoo, these Cain supporters want Romney confronted and taken out, yet Cain won't touch him. Perry DOES confront Romney and they're "disappointed and embarassed."

Either stop lying or praise the Romney attacks.

Bunch of weirdo's!
