Ron Paul’s economic plan (Dems, RINOs line up to defend Big Government)

Ever wonder what Ron Paul’s America would look like? Then read the budget outline that Paul released as part of his 2012 presidential bid. It promises to cut $1 trillion during his first year in office, balance the budget by 2015, withdraw us from all foreign wars and eliminate five Cabinet-level agencies in the process. Economists across the political spectrum say the impact of such drastic government spending cuts would be majorly disruptive and harmful to the economy in the short term.

“At the scale he’s talking about, it’s unlikely you could have an immediate reduction in government without hurtling the economy into recession,” says Kevin Hassett, economic policy director for the American Enterprise Institute and chief economic adviser to John McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign.

(snip)

By reducing the deficit from more than $1 trillion to $300 billion in just a year, Paul’s plan would upend the economy at a time when it’s already fragile, says Gus Faucher, director of macroeconomics for Moody’s Analytics. “That much deficit reduction in one year is going to be a huge drag on the economy . . . the reduction in spending is much greater than cuts in taxes,” says Faucher. “We’re seeing that impact in Europe right now, where severe fiscal austerity has caused big problems for the European economy.”

(snip)

Liberal economists were even more dire in their assessments of the Paul budget. “This is almost having the economy fall off a cliff,” says Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research...

The program would also turn Social Security, veterans’ benefits and Medicare into voluntary programs that would allow younger workers to opt out of the entitlements...“The system taxes young people to pay for benefits for old people. If young people opt out, who will pay for the benefits?” Hassett says.

Of course this young American wants out of the Ponzi scheme that is Socialist InSecurity.

Wait. How does Paul plan to cut cut cut and cut some more when he is the ear mar king of congress?
RP is a loon when it comes to foreign policy.= - sorry he just is.

I don’t think do. Since you make an assertion with no substantive component, I’m more inclined to believe you’re a rino sympathizer paid to post propaganda to ensure that RP is not elected. Sorry, you just are.

RP is a loon on foreign policy. It is a given.
The problem with RP supporters is that they actually do not know who he really is, they project on him some kind of weird notion he is constitutional scholar - he is not.

Yeah. Paul is a real patriot. I'll pass on letting the Iranians have Nukes to level the playing field and his blame America first BS. Ron Paul is a dangerous clown mouthing the words to stuff he never followed. Just check on his earmarks for Shrimp study in his district.

The plan doesn’t go far enough. Only 5 Cabinet departments? I can think of more that should be abolished (especially since they’re patently unconstitutional.)

Earmarks do not add to budgets, they specify how/where budgets are allocated. Do you want Congress specifying where appropriations are allocated, or the President?

RP is a loon when it comes to foreign policy.= - sorry he just is.

So you're in favor of propping up arab kings, establishing Islamic Republics, and sending troops to Africa? Sorry, I think it is loony to borrow money from China to prop up arab kings, establish Islamic Republics, and defend rich countries like South Korea against their pathetically poorer, starving neighbors.

If you read any history you'd know how the story ends for overstretched empires that spend beyond their means.

You’re right he’s a loon.

A) Why does it take a loon to propose a plan to balance the budget?

B) If a balanced budget is required to save us from a debt spiral, why is any conservative supporting someone else?

There is only one other candidate that I thought might propose balancing the budget. She’s not a loon but she’s not running.

[ I’ll pass on letting the Iranians have Nukes to level the playing field ]

And you would do WHAT?.. Invade?..
Not much anybody CAN do to stop them...
Even the Norks have atomic weapons..

Only a matter of time before they give them to the Somalis or Yemenese..
If not them then the Chinks will...
You know; the Norks do nothing without Chinese approval don’t you?..

Ron has some good ideas.. bring everybody home and then set the malefactors against each other..

Its a “Sun Tzu” thing.. You may not understand.. The Chinese surely do!..

This is a very good start; a much better spending plan than any of the other candidates have proposed so far. Hopefully the rest of the candidates take Paul’s proposal as a “good starting point” and propose even more drastic spending cuts.

Spoken like a true Ron Paul appeaser. Strained logic trying to push the point for no Foreign Policy. The stuff he prattles on about can be heard comming out of the mouth of any 99%er from Occupy. I’ll pass. I have little time for a Reagan hating Alex Jones conspiracy theorist who thinks Iran is not a threat.

BTW, is Israel one of those Malefactors? They will surely be annihilated in short order with Paul’s ideas.

The one good thing about having a wide variety of Republicans fight it out is that we get to witness a Darwinian selection of (mainly conservative) ideas, with the fittest surviving and evolving to fight another day.

May the best meme win!

"we get to witness a Darwinian selection of (mainly conservative) ideas"

This would only be true if the candidates were being judged on their intellect, experience, workable plans for the future.

If they continue to be judged on looks, posture, smiles, witty jabs, one-liners, claims of compassion, etc. then this is more Oprah-nian selection than Darwinian.

I don’t know who the candidate will be (though I’m currently on the Cain Train). I’m hoping, though, that by the end of the process we have not only a strong candidate but also a supportable platform that will actually have a good likelihood of saving our country.

The focus in my remark was on the ideas, not the human vectors propagating them.
