The Candidates:
Michele Bachmann
Bachmann is serving her 3rd full term in the U.S. House. Founder of the House Tea Party Caucus, worked as a tax attorney, and was a foster mother for 23 teenagers. She is a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Herman Cain
Cain is the former chief executive of Godfather's Pizza and former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. He lost the Georgia Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat in 2004. He was recently the host of Atlanta-based radio show.
Newt Gingrich
Gingrich served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. He represented Georgia's 6th congressional district as a Republican member from 1979 to 1999. He has a PhD in modern European history.
Ron Paul
Paul is serving his 11th full term in the U.S. House. Hes an ob-gyn and was Libertarian nominee for president in 1988. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for president in 2008
Rick Perry
Perry is the three term governor of Texas, from 2000 to current. He is a retired Air Force captain for former farmer. He has a degree in animal science.
Mitt Romney
Romney was governor of Massachusetts (2003 to 2007) and former CEO of Bain Capital, a private equity investment firm. He unsuccessfully sought the Republican 2008 nomination for president. He has an MBA (Harvard) and JD (Harvard Law).
Rick Santorum
Santorum served two terms in the U.S. House and two terms in the U.S. Senate. He became the Senate's third-ranking Republican in 2001. He was defeated for reelection in 2006.
All Perry said was that folks in a state like NH who dont have a sales tax wont like an additional tax, and that he would be happy to bump plans with Mr Cain.
The Lame Stream Media is scared to death of Herman Cain. It’s a shame that the the republican candidates are falling for this hatchet job on Cain. Disgusting.
Sheez, the things that bothers some people. BTW that is common when addressing a fellow believer in Christ...
Romney makes me sick. He doesn’t care about America. All he cares about is becoming the next POTUS. No thanks.
I agree with Bachmann: everyone ought to pay SOMETHING!
Are we getting a look-see at Cain/Gingrich 2012???
Perry now looks like johnny-come-lately, ooh ooh loook, I gotta plan too!
Newt is one of the few honorable men on that stage. He stuck up for Cain. That was a planned ambush from the get-go, and Newt saw it.
ditto.
romney makes me wanna puke.
OK. So the other (16th Amendment) constitutional problem we have would be how to keep income tax from resurrecting.
Cain better get off this 9-9-9 plan or that is all he will be talking about. I think Cain is doing reasonably well in trying to defend the indefensible. A President should be talking about cutting taxes and broader strategic aspects. Cain is stuck in the weeds defending the details of one specific plan that will go nowhere so it's really irrelevant. Big tactical mistake for Cain.
What planet do you live on?
I’m likin’ Newt. I think he could shred Obama in a debate.
I like Gingrich and stating the obvious that Cain has shifted the debate. His tax plan is not perfect, and I agree with that, but the debate is at least on the tax code which will allow refinement. I also think it is interesting all of them say they want to get rid of the tax code yet Cain is the only one with the plan to do so...
Yeah.
Ditto.
Is Romney suggesting that as President, he might eliminate all state-level sales taxes? I didn’t know a President could do that.
My reservation about the sales portion of the 9-9-9 plan is that it will cause a tax collection nightmare for retailers.
999 is a DOA stupid idea...raises taxes on middle class...easy to shoot at it, like fish in a barrel...
