How Does Herman Cain Define ‘Moderate’?
The Corner ^ | October 18, 2011 | Kevin D. Williamson

Posted on 10/18/2011 10:42:54 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Herman Cain says the Democrats he has supported in the past were “all moderate Democrats.” I was surprised to find my congressman, Rep. Jose Serrano, on that list. Is he a “moderate Democrat”? Let’s ask National Journal:

Serrano has one of the most liberal voting records in the House.

Egad. That does not sound like “moderate Democrat” to me. But let’s look at the details:

In opposition to Cuban Hispanics in Congress, Serrano has been Fidel Castro’s greatest champion in the House. He has sought repeal of economic sanctions against Cuba. When questions arose about Castro’s future after major surgery in July 2006, Serrano issued a press release telling President George W. Bush, “Hands Off Cuba.” When Castro’s brother, Raúl Castro, took control, Serrano said that it was “long past time to end the charade and begin dialogue and engagement with Cuba.” Another of his issues is statehood for Puerto Rico, which he calls an American “colony.” He backs a long-stalled referendum to determine the status of the island. In 2000, Serrano was arrested at the White House while protesting the Navy’s bombing range at Vieques, Puerto Rico. He also took credit for working with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and Citizen Energy Corp. to strike a deal to bring cheaper oil to the South Bronx. He has criticized the reluctance of House Democratic leaders to pass immigration reform.

In New York politics, Serrano backed former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer for mayor in 2001 and 2005. He backed civil-rights activist Al Sharpton for president in 2004.

Moderate? Maybe among a crowd of Occupy Wall Street Froot Loops. But Mr. Cain is a big-picture kind of guy, I suppose. Coddling Castro? Buddying up to Chavez? Minutiae!

Spot on. Perry is polling 3% for a reason.

Here is what the Perry people fail to understand.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fully 69% of Americans in the latest IBD/TIPP poll say they don’t favor states giving in-state college tuition to illegal residents while charging higher fees for legal, out-of-state residents. Just 22% support such a policy. 73% of Republicans are opposed vs. 20% in favor.

Independents have even stronger views: 74%-15%. Even Democrats are strongly opposed 58%-32%.

In fact, a majority of every major subgroup opposes giving illegals in-state tuition rates — men and women, rich and poor, urban and rural. Hispanics, who have more conflicted views over illegal immigration than is commonly known, are opposed, 54%-28%. Blacks, who often see illegal immigrants as rivals for jobs, are the most opposed, 80%-12%.

I was pointing out the state of Gore at the time, not actually Perry. I don’t know if you are old enough to remember the conversations of what passed for talking heads back then regarding Gore’s need to “go national” and “reveal his true beliefs” in those elections. It was one of those secrets that everyone knew. He was “allowed” to vote that way when it did not matter.

There are plenty of things that disqualify Perry for me, supporting Gore in 1988 is not one of them. Nor does supporting Dims financially in a state where your business is headquartered.

First line of the letter:

“I think your efforts in trying to reform the nation’s health care system are most commendable.”

This is taken from an image of the letter. Though he later goes on to talk about rural folk, the lynchpin of the letter is support for the effort. Perhaps this is not what he meant to say, like calling Conservatives “Heartless”, or conservative legislators “Murderers” because they oppose his view.

A question:

Aside from an LA Times story the day before Perry’s letter was dated, what was the “state of play” of public knowledge on what would be the details of Hillary’s HC reform plan? After that, my second question is, what evidence is there that Perry even knew what the LAT’s stated...which is iffy and vague as to final details...one day before his letter was released??

Unless those questions are addressed with evidence to show that Perry knew Hillary’s plan and therefore supported her plan, all of this being used against him is so much political hogwash.

I go beyond that and call it a deliberate smear.

That a story appeared somewhere, that even itself did not nail down the plan details but was an interim report, does in no way satisfy the need for evidence that Perry even knew about that report, much less knew the actual plan, when the following day his letter was released.

To back up my point, Perry’s letter didn’t say, “I support what your plan says”, he said he welcomed somebody trying to improve or fix what was wrong in healthcare, and his primary point was, rural folks always struggle for healthcare.

Translation: Whatever you do, don’t cause rural clinics and hospitals to close and make it harder for doctors to practice rural medicine...things are bad enough already.

“He gave $250 to Jose Serrano in 1993...

How do you know this guy wasn’t moderate in 1993?”

José Serrano was never a moderate; he was always an ultraliberal. If Herman Cain gave him $250 back in his days as CEO of Godfather’s Pizza in 1993, there must have been some bill that Serrano could help him with or something.

The Nebraska Dems that Cain contributed to were indeed moderate Democrats, though.

In all, it appears that over the past 20+ years Herman Cain contributed around $3,000 to Democrats, and OVER $350,000 TO REPUBLICANS. Suffice it to say, I am not concerned with Mr. Cain’s political-donation history.

He has even hurt himself in Texas, and now the in-state tuition law for illegals will probably get repealed which is the only good thing to come from Perry’s failed campaign.

Except the Texas Legislature passed this with nearly 100% of the vote.

And it isn't only Texas, a dozen other states have passed this as well and some with less restrictions than Texas.

“It’s been proven Perry endorsed Gore in 1988 for the primary (was not a part of his campaign) — which Dukakas won because Gore was 2nd amendment, pro-Life, moment of silence, family values guy until he ran with Clinton.”

While it is true that Gore was viewed by most observers to be the least liberal of the Democrats seeking the 1988 presidential nomination, he had already become a liberal Democrat a few years before he ran for president. Here is Al Gore’s voting record on abortion while in the House and Senate: http://nchla.org/keyresults.asp?state=&locale=checkcongper&congper=Gore&zip=&plusfour=&year=1975&year2=1992&issue=&terms=-1&bills=-1&vote=&displaysize=10&displaystarts=1&displaystarth=1&submit=Search+Key+Votes&displaystarts=11&displaystarts=21&displaystarts=31&displaystarts=1&displaystarth=11&displaystarth=21&displaystarth=31&displaystarth=21&displaystarth=11&displaystarth=1

Gore was generally pro-life in the House (he cast a handful of pro-abortion votes over the years), but within less than a year of joining the Senate in 1985 he was 100% pro-abortion (he did cast a couple of pro-life votes as a first-year Senator).

I don’t have his voting record on guns and other issues, but by 1988 Gore had already abandoned his “conservative Democrat” charade in order to be viable in a national Democrat primary.

Then again, I don’t think that Rick Perry’s support for Gore in the 1988 Democrat primary (before going on to vote for George H.W. Bush in the general) means that he’s a closet liberal, anymore than Herman Cain’s $250 contribution to José Serrano in 1993 means that he’s a closet communist.

And the Palinites turned Cainites can't take any disagreement or debate without massive slander and temper fits. After all the piss and vinegar and inane spinning you and your cult threw at everyone who questioned the brilliance and intentions of royal Sarah, she turned around and stabbed her cult in the back. Cain has made it clear he supports Romney and Romney is a flaming socialist. Now it comes to light Cain funds flaming socialists in the Dem. party, too. All you can do is spit hate at the messenger; a fellow freeper.

Reply to the article instead of pissanting all over the Cain threads. People will be reading these threads looking for guidance as they make up their minds. You and the Palinites do no service to Cain nor to the Tea Party acting the part of a mindless thug.

Your attitude does not represent the Tea Party. My experience is that they are thoughtful people who don't want to be bullied, spun and tricked by the GOP anymore.

It’s always a good idea to the donate to the party in power when you’re in business. That’s just the way the political system works.

Kinda like asking the powers that be to don’t forget to include the rural Texas folks in your plans, huh?

Yes.

I don't think so. Not from what's coming out. He can't be nailed down on anything. And when challenged, it's a "joke." "Can't you take a joke?" How do you know how to gauge someone who does that? It's like being defensive and saying "Sorry!" when you don't mean it.

At what point in his life did Mr.Cain see the light and become a Republican? I would guess he voted for many Dems. And, how does this affect his job as POTUS?

Good question.

And how much does Mr. Cain believe in “social justice?”

I do believe his church does and that he used the term in his book.

Your new chew-bone. Have fun.

It's not 'new', it's been known for years.

You really should stop reading only La Raza Rick Perry propaganda. Advocating for your candidate is understandable and expected. But you make a fool of yourself by ignoring the facts surrounding the reasons why your hero is polling at only 3%. Here's a clue, it isn't my fault or the fault of any other FReeper who hasn't drunk the La Raza Rick Perry Kool-Aid; it's because American do not agree with his pro-ILLEGAL alien record.

Fully 69% of Americans in the latest IBD/TIPP poll say they don’t favor states giving in-state college tuition to ILLEGAL aliens while charging higher fees for legal, out-of-state residents. Just 22% support such a policy. 73% of Republicans are opposed vs. 20% in favor.

Independents have even stronger views: 74%-15%. Even Democrats are strongly opposed 58%-32%.

Hispanics, who have more conflicted views over ILLEGAL immigration than is commonly known, are opposed, 54%-28%. Blacks, who often see illegal immigrants as rivals for jobs, are the most opposed, 80%-12%.

Nearly 3 of 4 Republicans and Independents DO NOT approve of what they heard La Raza Rick defend in the debates. You can discount that all you want, but it is a fact. And while La Raza Rick may appeal to the few FReepers like you who post incessantly about him Americans of all stripes don't want him and have said so.

Think about that and try to conjure up a cogent response.
