Minnesota Congresswomen and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann has become the latest politician to call for an impenetrable fence along the entire length of the border with Mexico. "President Obama has failed the American people by failing to secure the southern border," said Bachmann. "I will secure that border and that will be Job One."
Statements like that may get some attention, but they are not practical. Don't take our word for it; take Rick Perry's.
The Texas governor has been called a lot of things, but he's hardly a mushy liberal. Yet even this tough Texan sneers at calls for a Berlin Wall-style border fence spanning hundreds of miles from Brownsville to El Paso.
Two reasons: We can't afford it, and we don't need it.
The cost of a barrier like that would be staggering, certainly in the billions. Bachmann and others are silent about how they would pay for it.
Moreover, it is unnecessary. The Texas-Mexico border includes many miles of desert that are either lightly populated or devoid of any human presence. Illegal immigrants don't cross there. They make their moves along urban corridors.
Perry knows this because he is the governor of Texas. He knows the issue is more nuanced - like his support for in-state tuition for children of illegal immigrants.
Secure the border? Absolutely - but in an intelligent way that puts our resources where they will have the most impact.
Voters should be wary of sound bites from candidates that fire up special-interest groups but lack logic. The next president will need real ideas, not gimmicks, to solve the challenges facing this nation.
That is EXACTLY what it is. Claiming that it is not is insane.
Amnesty: the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals
The penalty for illegally being in the country is deportation. When President Perry decides that the illegals will be pardoned from that penalty and given documents and allowed to continue to live here, he is by definition giving them AMNESTY.

Now here’s a president who would truly secure our borders!
Yes. Fencing works in urban areas.
In New Brunswick, one of the Lord's least intelligent creatures, the Moose, simply follows fencing until it ends and then crosses the road.
You just don't get it, do you?
She’s never been a governor of a border state so she spouts off w/o a clear idea, or knowledge of what she’s saying. Sort of like her autism claims about a cancer vaccine.
David Gregory: Would you deport illegal immigrants in the country right now?
Herman Cain: Here is my approach to illegal immigration. Here again, this is whats resonating with the people. How I would solve the problem. Its not as simple as, would you deport. We must secure the border. It would be a combination of a physical fence, technology and in some areas we might have to put troops there. We must secure the border. Secondly we must promote the path to citizenship thats already there. We need to clean up the bureaucracy. Third enforce the laws that are already there. The way you do that is number four, which is a bold idea empower the states to do what the federal government cant do and wont do as far as dealing with illegals that are in the United States today.

Gregory: Why you and not Mitt Romney?
Why me and not Mitt Romney? Mitt Romney is a great businessman. I have a lot of respect for him. He has been more of a Wall Street executive. I have been more of a Main Street executive.

By the way, this is just another example of how phony this whole pretense is.
The illegals CANNOT apply for citizenship. As a general principle, a foreign citizen living here illegally is not eligible under our laws to apply for adjustment to legal permanent resident status.
By claiming that the illegal students "must apply for citizenship" shows that it is a pretense for public relations purposes, to try to fool people who don't know our laws into thinking these people are on their way to citizenship.
They aren't, until President Perry gives them amnesty.
She may not be governor but what do you think Minnesota borders on the north?
She led us along? She’s a private citizen, just like you and me! Did I string you along by not declaring my candidacy? Ever think that she really was pondering a run and praying about it? I’ve worked at the White House and on presidential campaigns and it is NOT something to take lightly, especially after three years of being attacked day-and-night by 98% of the press corps! She had the media, nutroots bloggers, Hollywood, academia, unions, NGOs, DNC, RNC, pundits, cable TV, think tanks, Romneyites, White House, NOW, ACORN, communists and thousands of others arrayed against her and going at her hammer-and-tongs! Can you blame her for passing on it at this time? Where were the other so-called “conservative” leaders and pundits when she needed back-up? NOWHERE TO BE FOUND! And you know it!
If Milt, Ricardo, Barry, Newt or Michele had to put up with 2% of the $#*+ that she did, they’d go running home to mama!
I did hear him talk about an electric fence. I don't believe he was joking. He may say so now, but he hit it on the head. An electrified barrier would be just fine.
Are you saying TX has no urban areas?
She’s smarter than a governor of a border state.
Texas has fencing in urban areas.
I wasn’t able to access your link. Maybe you could provide us with an excerpt to make your point, please.
And the moose just walk around it.

“Texas has fencing in urban areas.”
Did it help?
And who was responsible for the fence?
Herman Cain’s statement about the border are no different than what Perry has advocated for years.
Good of him to “lift” from the best but Cain should have given a “hat tip” to Gov. Perry.
I know, and Rick and the gang are apparently just fine with it.
