Princeton academic Cornel West attended the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington on Sunday, and then nipped over to the Supreme Court, where he joined 18 other members of Occupy Wall Street subsidiary October 2011 / Stop the Machine in getting arrested when they refused to obey police orders to clear the area.
West is a fitfully amusing example of self-righteous academic incoherence, who can be counted on to produce memorable sound bites. He recently told black presidential candidate Herman Cain to get off the symbolic crack pipe because Cain is insufficiently cowed by the menace of institutional racism. He also thinks Barack Obama is a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats who has a certain fear of free black men. Hes a smooth fit for the blind populist, collectivist rage of the OWS crowd.
What was he doing on the steps of the Supreme Court? The October 2011 website explains:
The October2011.org Movement that is occupying Freedom Plaza, led an impromptu march of 250 people up Pennsylvania Avenue to the U.S. Supreme Court where Dr. Cornel West climbed on the steps of the Supreme Court and denounced court decisions that have produced money-based elections that empower corporations. Dr. West was holding a sign that said "Poverty is the Greatest Violence of All." He was arrested because holding political signs on the Supreme Court steps is illegal.Dr. West spoke to more than 500 people on Freedom Plaza where he said that "if Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were alive today, he would be on Freedom Plaza." West described how the struggle against, poverty, war and injustice continues and confidence that the people will succeed. He applauded the occupation as "an inclusive social revolution for all of us"...

“Cornel West is Under Arrest”
Do not fail to take him to jail!
Seems like the start of some good rappin’;)
Give the devil his due--this cheeseball has made the system work better for himself than most of the Wall Street brightboys he condemns.
I wonder, does the Supreme Court Police have their own jail cells under the Supreme Court Building or do they turn prisoners over to another agency (DC Police?) for detention?
I didn’t know until we went to DC this year that the Supreme Court has their own police department, and they are responsible for exactly one building.
The prosecutors (unspecified) declined to press charges - http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/17/national/main20121470.shtml
About time.
Or... DR. SEUSS...
Or... DR. SEUSS...
It rhymed real good...LOL
My first thought also, but the man never made any sense when I would see him on TV.
GRRRRRREAT news! GRRRRRREAT rap!
It would be too bad if he got injured resisting arrest.
It’s possible that if King were alive he would have joined Cornel West in protesting at the Supreme Court—but West would not have just attended a dedication of a monument to MLK.
Throw away the key
West is one scary looking dude.
The headline shocked me for a second. I thought it said Colonel West, as in Allen West.
We have to try to keep the rappin’ clean on FR;)
If Cornell had any credibility, he’d have been protesting an MLK statue made by a Chinese artist, in spite of the fact that we have an ample supply of black artists right here. Those fools in DC could have at least chosen an American artist, but nobody is even raising this issue. So, Obama runs around in a Canadian made bus braying about American jobs, right after attending a reception for the Chinese martin Luther Quang Memorial. As an artist myself, I find this extremely offensive! One wonders what King would have thought of this himself. My guess is that he would have preferred a black artist.
