Don’t be VAT stupid (Cain was AGAINST a National Sales Tax last November)
Herman Cain T.H.E New Voice, Inc. ^ | November 21, 2010 | Herman Cain

Posted on 10/16/2011 5:42:57 PM PDT by Polybius

There’s one message from the 2010 elections that many so-called policy makers, political elites and analysts did not hear. Namely, the American people are not as uninformed and stupid as they think we are.

President Obama’s Debt Commission and the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Debt Reduction Task Force have both floated its ideas for reducing our nation’s runaway national debt. .....

The worst idea is a proposed national sales tax, which is a disguised VAT (value added tax) on top of everything we already pay in federal taxes.

Here are three of the biggest reasons the national retail sales tax is the worst idea on the table.

First, we have a spending problem in Washington, D.C. not a revenue problem. ......

Even worse is reason number two: In every country that has established a VAT with the promise of reducing their national debt, the VAT has eventually gone up or expanded on top of the existing tax structure. ....

For the liberal naysayers who say that would not happen, you lose! Just look at the Social Security system, Medicare and Medicaid. Over the years since their inception, taxes have gone up, benefits have gone down and they are still on a path of insolvency.

Giving the administration and Congress another tool to tax us and confuse us is like giving an alcoholic a key to the liquor store with no supervision, only to discover that he locks the door after he is safely inside.

A national retail sales tax on top of all the confusing and unfair taxes we have today is insane! It gives the out-of-control bureaucrats and politicians in denial one more tool to lie, deceive, manipulate and destroy this country.

People are not stupid. Maybe they will hear us in 2012.

Maybe it was a joke, like that joke about electrifrying Mexicans.

What's wrong with electrifying invaders? Heck, we might get a few Al Qaeda as well.

That’s a regular theme with you, isn’t it. Be ticked off. Get used to it, in fact.

Oooh. “Told”. As in, “you have no opinion. Be schooled.”

But he has already stated that the only business tax deduction would be on equipment replacement. How does that absolve them of paying 9% more on everything else including his accountant services? How then is it not a VAT?

That's not true. A VAT is when there is a tax on every transfer of a product. Cain's plan only taxes the final retail sale. Also there are business tax deductions on more than equipment replacement.

9% Business Flat Tax

Gross income less all purchases from other U.S. located businesses, all capital investment, and net exports.

By your logic, we should nominate John McCain again. He has lots of govt. experience. Or maybe we could get Bob Dole to run another time; with a good dose of Viagra, he might be up for it.

Gee, all those experienced politicians like Lyndon Johnson, Jimmuh Carter, Bubba Clinton, W. Bush, Mike Huckleberry, etc. have done such a great job of reining in cancerous govt. growth.

If I operate a rock quarry in Rhode Island and only sell rocks locally, what constitutional authority does the federal government have to implement a tax on product I sell?

You would only be taxed if you sold them to a resident of Wickford.

Well, Reagan Man, you have said a lot on this thread bashing Cain, mostly his lack of political experience.

I'm not gonna try to argue that out with you, just gonna ask a question.

You label yourself "Reagan Man"...why?

Many men have had as much or more political experience as Reagan. Does that make them more acceptable in your eyes?

Or was it perhaps something else that you admired in Reagan.

If so, was that something called.....drum roll.......character?

Well, if you answered yes, I ask you to closely evaluate the backgrounds, not the political but the personal, of all the candidates.

Yeah, I know that may be hard to do, but the internet is kinda cool, try it.

I am confidant that after diligently researching the crowd that one will stand out for you.

Search for what you seek...you may well find it.

Man, that is a major find. It just shows you that you can never trust a TALKER with no governing record because he will just say anything based on the audience or the occasion or the circumstances. The thing about Cain the TALKER is that he totally ignores what he said in the past, even if it was an hour ago, as if it never happened, or he just claims that he was joking. America has to learn how to take a joke Cain the TALKER said last month, but eventually the joke would be Cain himself.

For some reason Cain the TALKER reminds of those silly characters in Tyler Perry stupid comedy sitcoms that air on TBS.

What is very amusing is that all of the arguments that have been made by those who are skeptical of the National Sales Tax of the 9-9-9 Plan are EXACTLY the same arguments that Cain himself made against a National Sales Tax last November.

No they are not the same at all. Your use of bold was an effort to overemphasize some comments over others to make it look like he was talking about the same thing, but clearly he was not. You must have missed the part of the 9-9-9 plan which eliminates the other taxes he is speaking of in this article - scrapping the tax code and starting over. The Commission's plan did no such thing.

There’s only one way they can stick it to us, and that’s through legislating a higher rate.

This can happen at any time, with any new tax law. As long as Congress is able to get the political backing for a tax raise. Which is very difficult.

But the point is, your argument is meaningless because Congress can always raise rates.

It’s like saying don’t take your vacation in London, because it might rain—take it in Seattle instead. (News flash—it rains a lot in Seattle.)

“Well, it seems that Cain was firmly AGAINST a National Sales Tax last November before he was FOR a National Sales Tax now.”

That’s what someone who doesn’t know VAT might claim.

A VAT isn’t a sales tax.

A sales tax is imposed once, when a product is sold to the consumer.

A VAT is imposed at each stage of production as a product moves through the supply chain. Any time value is added another layer of tax gets piled on.

So it’s interesting to see both the Perry and Romney camps spinning this VAT = sales tax story.

Are they ignorant? After all, most Americans aren’t familiar with how a VAT works.

Or do they know the difference perfectly well, and figure that they can confuse a large number of voters by deceiving them?

>> after Cain and Romney have finished their tag-team attacks on Perry.

An unpopular point of view, but one that’s not unrealistic.

I like Cain, but I’m not convinced he’s operating independently of the establishment. The early attacks against Perry were suspicious, but maybe Cain was being simply opportunistic.

Cain’s statements have been consistent. You need to think about this very carefully.

He was opposed to a national sales tax, if it were imposed on top of what we already have.

His plan would not impose it on top of what we have, but instead it would eliminate the current tax structure and replace it with the new plan.

No sense reading past this remark. If the author doesn't understand the difference between a VAT tax and a sales tax, he is either ignorant, stupid, or both.

THAT is what many of us are concerned about — along with the idea that a) the sales tax will add to, not supplant, the income tax, and b) a revenue hungry Congress will very soon raise the 9-9-9 rates to 12-12-12 or even higher.

These are NOT idle concerns, and to ignore them is to be naive of how our big government actually works.

I share those concerns with you.

The need to reform and simplify our current tax code to ensure that everyone contributes is essential. The percentage of taxpayers declines everytime the welfare nanny state increases. Leaving 51% of us to pay is not acceptable.

Any reform of our tax code, as with our current code, leaves open the door for politicians to decide winners and losers. That is where the diligence of all of us collectively to elect worthy representatives going forward provides a guard. We must remain engaged and not allow ourselves to become apathetic as we did after Reagan - that is what slowly eroded to give us our current Congress and Ozero.

Yes, the plan in the Commission’s report was exactly what Cain described “in his own words” that you posted.
