UMass students rally at student union as part of OWS movement; profs urge change to socialism

More than 200 students gathered outside the University of Massachusetts Student Union to continue their call for economic justice as part of the Occupy Wall Street movement, which enters its 26th day.

...

Student after student on Wednesday told stories of parents losing jobs and health care, or of having mounting student debt caused by what they say is Wall Street greed. Some bore signs reading “1 percent stop bogarting your stash.”

There were chants of “one solution, revolution,” and a call to spread the word about Occupy UMass so there would be enough students and others to occupy a UMass building – likely the Whitmore Administration Building. Two economics professors spoke about the need for economic change.

“We need to change the system,” said assistant professor Deepankar Basu “if we want to get rid of the problem.” He said capitalism “creates inequalities… it leads to imperialism and war.”

Professor David Kotz said there is more than enough money for all to live comfortably. He said, for example, if the military budget was reduced to its late 2000 level, $23.9 million would be available – enough money to pay the cost of a UMass education at the in-state rate for 19 million students.

With a change in the economy ‘there would be a decent lifestyle for everyone in this country,” he said. “No rich person is getting richer by creating jobs.” He said the way to equity and jobs for all those who want and are able to take one is a systemic change to socialism.

“Capitalism has had its days and it’s failing to meet the needs of the majority,” he said.

With help from liberal professors, they managed to get 200 students, out of approx. 27K.

And where did these idiotic professors get their Economics degrees?

But wouldn’t 19 million students lead to over crowding,
and think of the parking problem!

Ha...A-holes.

At my college the socialists have been trying to rile people up to occupy. So far they've been ignored. I had the privilege of scraping some of their rotten flyers off the walls.

Wonder when they start debating on how many people will need to be liquidated...

Probably got their “Degrees” from.... UMASS. Doesn’t have the brains to realize that a once famous country tried exactly what they preach. Do they know how it turned out?
I doubt it.
The Communists mottoed a revolution on merely three sylables....” BREAD...LAND...PEACE”
The UMASS students have 2 mottoes, each with 8 syllables.
a. GIMME GIMME———GIMME GIMME
b. I WANT I WANT-——I WANT I WANT

I am all in favor of socialism in Massachusetts. All socialists should move to Massachusetts to take advantage of its “enlightened” policies.

Sounds to me like assistant professor Deepankar Basu needs to give 2/3 of his salary to the poor students. That may equalize things a bit and he’d get to practice a little socialism.

Economics is classified as a "social science," the weakest category of studies daring to claim the title of a science, and which is fatally contaminated by politics.

But does any tomfool in the humanities get to pontificate on economics? Without even a math degree?
