WASHINGTON (AP) Mitt Romney's early success in the Republican presidential race is challenging the tea party's clout. Will it continue to pull the GOP sharply right? Will it slowly fade? Or merge with mainstream Republican elements in a nod to pragmatism, something it's hardly known for?
On the surface, Romney's strength seems at odds with the tea party's fiery success in ousting Republicans seen as compromisers, and in making the House GOP caucus more ideological, even when its leaders plead for flexibility.
Romney defends the government's 2008 bank bailouts, plus the mandated health insurance he initiated as Massachusetts governor. He says he can work with "good Democrats." Although he later changed, Romney once supported abortion rights, gun control and gay rights.
These positions run counter to the beliefs and goals of many tea party activists scattered throughout the country. Yet Romney is faring better in polls, fundraising and debates than are contenders with stronger tea party credentials, including Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry.

No, I’m not gonna.
The GOP doesn’t want me, and I don’t want them.
If that means the end of the country, well then I guess that’s what it means.
If we elect Romney the country will go down. If we stick to our principles and vote for an agreed upon conservative and lose, then obama will be reelected and the country will go down. Better to have it go down under a demoncRAT. So I say let us vet the conservatives and agree on one of them and stick with him through all the nay-saying and tons of money spent on the Trojan Horse.
This is the reason that I am not backing anyone until I know finally what Sarah is going to do. It may come down to the last day to vote, but I’m there for the woman who has been my president since she set foot on stage.
If Romney gets the nomination he will pick a very conservative running mate. Deja vu all over again.
There is only one way this moron infested country is going to learn, and that is the hard way.
Let the learning begin.
I am not going to argue with you. I hate Romney and want Cain to win.
WHAT RISE? He’s been stuck below 30% the entire campaign and can’t crack it.
It seems that all the big-shots in the Republican hierarchy are frothing at the mouth and screaming at Tea Partiers that we must start loving Mitt. Sadly for Mitt, most aren’t real fond of him. He seems just a little too slick and a little too eager to get along with Democrats. Sure, he’d be a huge improvement over Obama, but so would your halfwit Uncle Fred.
Romneys rise? Is this satire? Has he ever risen above 25% or whatever number he was at when he declared? I sure havent seen a rise. Ive seen attempted coronation but no rise.
As far as I'm concerned, build a fence, dig a trench and fill them with a bunch of alligators (sorry if anyone thinks I'm insensitive), shut down the Cuban dry foot, wet foot crap. This country is going down the drain with the amount of money we spend on illegals health care, education, etc.
If you can't get here legally like I did with my family, then that's too bad.
Looking around at the hippies on Wall Street, we have enough problems trying to take back our beautiful country from these fools, let alone also taking on the illegals.
