Cain's 'impossible dream' resonates with voters

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) — Herman Cain is firing up the crowd at a tea party rally in this West Tennessee town when the generator powering his sound system shudders to a halt.

Cain stands awkwardly for a few moments then suddenly begins to sing. Slowly at first but gaining in speed, he belts out "Impossible Dream" in the rich baritone he's honed in church choir.

"You know, when it's your rally, you can do what you want to do!" Cain says as he finishes with a raucous laugh. The 500 or so supporters who have jammed the strip mall parking lot to hear the Republican Party's newest star speak roar their approval.

Momentum restored, Cain launches into a pitch for his signature 9-9-9 tax plan, and the crowd is right there with him, chanting 9-9-9 along with the Georgia businessman. The plan would scrap the current tax code and replace it with a 9 percent tax on personal income and corporations as well as a new 9 percent national sales tax.

The 65-year-old's improbable campaign for the presidency is all about momentum right now. How does he maintain the wave he's riding in recent polls that have catapulted him from an also-ran in the GOP race to the elite top tier?

There are many reasons his bid could fade as quickly as it rose. He acknowledged Friday that he will trail former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry significantly in fundraising. Cain has never held elected office and could wilt under the rigors of the campaign trail and the withering scrutiny coming his way.

"In the field right now, he's the most like me," said Jimmy Hoppers, a 60-year-old physician from Jackson, who was hoping to meet Cain so he could hand deliver a $1,000 donation to his campaign. "He's run a business and paid the bills. He's authentic."..................Cain is needs a lot of voters like this.

MSNBC’s take on Cain’s rise to the top of the GOP field is that...he’s gaining traction because it allows racist Repulicans to disguise their racism by voting for a blackman.

No, really.

not just voters, but Indpendents, who are looking with favor on the 999 plan, which is the kind of out-of-the-box bold thinking that caused them to become Independents in the first place.

Conclusion

Mr. Cain’s 999 plan is on the right track with its goal of a lower, flatter, simpler, fairer, more transparent tax system. Nine percent would be a wonderful top rate for the income tax, compared to today’s 35% top rate. And let’s face it, abolishing the payroll tax and the death tax would simply be awesome.

But adding a national retail sales tax on top of the federal income tax (even a flat tax) is a bad idea, because it creates the infrastructure for a federal-level, European-style VAT.

And if Cain’s 9% personal flat tax failed to remain flat (as happened with Ronald Reagan’s promising but ultimately failed 1986 tax reform), we would end up with the worst of both worlds: a confiscatory income tax and a job-crushing VAT.

Paradoxically, then, if you want higher taxes and permanently bigger government, one way to get there would be to support Herman Cain’s 999 plan!

Two rousing cheers, for boldness and imagination. And one bronx cheer, for a dangerous lack of foresight.

Without any deductions for money put into 401k, IRA, and HSAs, my wife and I paid slightly less than 9% on a gross income exceeding $135K; tell me again what the advantages are of the “9-9-9” plan?

Acording the IRS, as quoted in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, taxpayers making between $50K and $100K pay an average of 9% in tax; tell me again the advantages of the “9-9-9” plan?

Or as Rick Santorum asked, “What’s wrong with ‘0-0-0’?”

I would like to see Obama top this.

He can barely pack a union hall these days.

Nominee Herman Cain will absolutely CLEAN THE MESSIAH'S CLOCK in the 2012 debates. Obama's teleprompters will even be shedding tears and tottering. This is our last chance as a Republic folks. 4 more years of Obama and its over for the USA.

Herman Cain is a solutions man...he has proven he can successfully change the way things are done. O'Reilly, Rove, and other pundits say Cain knows nothing about "foreign affairs"....shame on them! Obama the Community Organizer, synonymous with Marxism...show Obama's foreign affairs record since in office is abysmal starting with returning the bust of Winston Churchill to Briton and shamefully apologizing for American Exceptionalism around the world.

Herman Cain LOVES his country, he takes pride in being an American...those two attributes alone make him a winner.

Very well said. One thing I will add is to contrast Cain from Obama. Cain loves the country. Obama? Do even Democrats think Obama loves the country?

“he will trail former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry significantly in fundraising.”

His Q3 fundraising was 2.8 mil compared to 2.4 in Q2.

If the statement above were true, he shouldn’t be where he is. It is obvious that he can do more with the money he has than the other guys. A large number of passionate volunteers and a clear conservative message goes a long way.

The advantage of the 999 plan is that it distributes the tax burden more fairly, and is simpler to understand and use.

It also forces tax scofflaws, and other ‘freeloaders’ into paying taxes.

It lowers the tax rates on job creators, freeing up more money for investments and new job creation.

It also makes it much harder to raise tax rates.

Need more? Let me know, there are dozens more reasons why this bold, new, plan is good for America.

If a person with gross income from wages of $50,000 to $100,000 files single, has no dependents, no itemized deductions, no tax credits, etc. the person ends up paying approximately 28% in federal income tax. Add the 7.65% in Social Security and Medicare tax and that’s 35.65%.

The federal government has been gradually sneaking a sale tax structure into the federal income tax for years. You’re eventually going to get a federal sales tax one way or another. Might as well as just fess up to it and simplify the whole tax code which is just a mess of social engineering, political pay offs, and wealth redistribution provisions.

we would end up with the worst of both worlds: a confiscatory income tax and a job-crushing VAT.

Just one problem with that doomsday scenario--it would be political suicide for anyone to vote for it. And the majority of congressmen are in no hurry to unilaterally and abruptly end their careers over a lethal vote.

If we ever got to where such a situation could actually pass, we'd already be dead and rotting by the roadside anyway.

Two rousing cheers, for boldness and imagination. And one bronx cheer, for a dangerous lack of foresight.

But his plan is much much better than what we have now. And with the exception of Gingrich, who has proposed a 15% flat tax, Cain is the only one who's plan isn't to nibble around the edges of our current system. That's a great barometer for who's a conservative and who's not. Cain has said he's willing to listen and wants good ideas. And we both know what he has proposed will never pass Congress. But he might get some broad, sweeping changes even if he doesn't get a full replacement of our current system just by pushing the issue. And right now by looking at the news cycle the issue is definitely being pushed.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
