Friends of Scott Dekraai on Thursday were trying to understand how a man described as a lovable fisherman could be the same man accused of killing eight people in the worst massacre in Orange County history.

A license plate placard on his truck indicated Dekraai’s political leanings. The Tea Party placard contained a simple phrase — “Help Save America.”

It seems like they blame an accident on the water for his change in demeanor and then just have a small line at the end about a sticker. Like some editor or another person added it to the story.

So, it was a child custody battle that led to this? I want to hear the media explain exactly how it must have worked both ways.

Once in my career I got sucked into handling a child custody contest. NEVEER, NEVER again. The emotions involved in such fights are utterly bitter, irreconcilable, and uncontrollable. The only surprising thing about this case is that massacres like this happen so relatively infrequently in child custody cases.

A recent car bombing in Monroe, MI nearly killed a man and his two young sons. He just happens to be a lawyer who had handled a case involving divorce and/or child custody rulings.

There hasn’t been much subsequent coverage since it happened about a month ago so I hope I have my facts straight.

This is awful but I have seen child custody cases drive people over the edge of sanity. I've seen one parent manipulate the kids and accuse the ex of horrible crimes in order to get custody or child support. But “It's for the children” so I guess they can justify it in their minds.

I delivered that paper as the Independent in the mornings, and the Press Telegram in the evenings back in the 1950’s. I remember commentary from customers that led me to believe then that it was a biased product.
