Friend of Perry is enemy of almost everyone else
St. Petersburg Times ^ | October 11, 2011 | Daniel Ruth

You might say the oh so very Rev. Robert Jeffress, the Torquemada of Texas, has put the yuck into ecumenical.

Or put another way, you're all going to hell. And that means you, by the way. Jewish? Please, don't even think about heaven. Catholic? One word: complete toast. Okay, two words. Muslim? Really, now. Mormon? Cue The Omen theme. And as for Buddhist, Quaker or anything else that doesn't comport with Jeffress' brand of puckered fundamentalist evangelicalism, well, you might as well just go ahead and set yourselves on fire right now.

It was the scriptural snake oil salesman Jeffress, supporter of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who denounced the Mormon religion of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney the other day as a "cult."

Perry, in a deft pirouette, quickly attempted to disassociate himself from the biblical bully's bigotry. But since the Republican candidate had approved Jeffress to introduce him at a Values Voter Summit (read: tea party on steroids), and since Pastor Foghorn Leghorn heads one of those enormous mega-ATM churches in Dallas, surely Perry had to know his opening act was so judgmentally pinched he made the Taliban look like a bunch of Kumbaya-singing/Birkenstock-wearing/feminism-loving Unitarians.

And Mrs. Perry is bawling about her husband being victimized because of his religion. Oh, this is so perfect.

We are kindred souls, Salvation; according to this Pastor we are all headed for the eternal fires of hell - all Catholics and all Mormons and a host of others. Welcome to my world.

Don’t you just love it? I especially liked this line: “ . . . you might as well just go ahead and set yourselves on fire right now.”

LOL

Well, Catholics aren’t but Mormons are. Even the Catholic church teaches that.

Dirty tricks? How could you possible blame Romney for this hilarious piece? The author is a fallen-away Catholic for goodness' sake. It makes a mockery out of the pastor condemning a pile of humanity to hell. He looks foolish. This has nothing whatsoever to do with Romney.

Alright, I am NOT a Perry fan. (Quite the opposite. Perry supporters are getting right sick of me)

BUT, I will be the first to denounce this article. The man is not Perry’s spiritual adviser. He is a man who *INTRODUCED* Perry. He supports Perry for president. (I’m sure Cain, Romney and Bachmann have their share of cooks.)

It’s as simple as that.

Perry has enough real negatives. We don’t need to go into this low-brow crap.

This writer compares a Baptist Preacher with the Taliban.

Frankly, that's gross. While we waste time reading this the Taliban are stoning a 12 year old girl for letting her period stain a prayer rug.

Writers who come up with these comparisons are usually too ignorant to deal with serious matters and should have their hands slapped.

That’s alright by me. If heaven is populated by self-righteous asses like Jeffress, I’d just as soon be in hell with all the good Mormons I know.

What a stupid article. Who cares? Every religious group thinks other groups are wrong, that is why they are in a different group.

Any mention of Rev Wright?

YEP

But the guy didn’t even get the story right.

Bryan Preston isn’t having any of this, though.
Romney even hit Perry for saying that Jeffress’ remarks “hit it out of the park.” Romney decried a “religious test” and called on Perry to disassociate himself from Jeffress’ remarks.
The problem with Romney’s version of what happened is that it’s almost entirely untrue.

The Perry campaign did not select Rev. Jeffress; the Summit selected him and got a perfunctory sign-off from the campaign. Rev. Jeffress’ remark that Mormonism is a cult was not made in his introduction to Gov. Perry, but in remarks made to reporters later. As soon as he was aware of Jeffress’ remark, Perry did in fact disassociate himself with them entirely.

I cannot stand it when Perry supporters twist Cain’s words (”Cain wants Romney to be his VP”), but I won’t meet dishonesty with dishonesty.

If we allow this crap, then where will we be when some nut supports Cain or Bachmann?

If this man were Perry’s spiritual adviser, then we’d have something to talk about.

He’s not, so we don’t.

“Catholics aren’t but Mormons are”

Reaganaut - Going to hell, you mean? Fortunately, you are not the judge of any human being. The Pastor has condemned Catholics to burn in hell along with the Mormons and Jews. I feel I am in good company.

Does the LDS church believe that all people, including non-Mormons and women, are going to the best heaven?

While I personally do not accept the pastor’s statement it is refreshing to hear someone take a stand about something. To put it another way it beats the h*ll out of the current cult of “tolerance.” The pastor’s statement did not even mildly harm anyone.
