About 50 'Occupy Utica' protesters spend the night in tents

About 50 of the estimated crowd of 400 people who 'occupied' Utica Thursday evening ended up spending the night.

The diehard protesters say they will continue to 'Occupy Utica' 24 hours a day as long as the weather permits.

One of the organizers, Ken Keplinger says he does not want to put anyone's health in jeopardy, so as soon as the temperatures drop overnight to a temperature the group believes is unsafe, the protest will then only take place during the day.

Keplinger says they do plan to stay 24 hours a day, as long as they can.

Keplinger, who himself spent the night in a tent along Liberty Bell Park says it was rainy and cold on this first overnight, but it was an enthusiastic bunch who spent the night, "high spirits, a lot of people going by and honking for us. People from Utica, from businesses all over. They've been coming by, they're saying way to go, thanks for being out here for us, here's some food, here's some water."

The crowd was estimated to be about 400 during the peak 6:00 p.m. hour Thursday night, when the group held its kickoff event.

Just like their counterparts in the ongoing 'Occupy Wall Street' protest in New York City many of the protesters here in Utica chant and hold up signs with slogans about political and financial reform.

I know a sheriff down in Arizona who would be happy to provide them tents, in a climate where they could spend 24/7/365 in...maybe for several years. He would even provide them with ‘free’ pink underware. :)

Friendlier, nicer people you can't find anywhere. Upstate New York, the Mohawk Valley, is home to some of the best folk.

Plus, if you need to snuff someone, East Utica has people who can be of help. You're not gonna find better hit men in any other English speaking country.

Thank God our troops didn't have that attitude during the winter of '77 - '78.

“more important, what exactly are they protesting?”

They have no idea.
Really, they don’t.
They admit it.

When I grew up in NYS, everything north of White Plains was ok. I’m dismayed to hear the line has moved to the Mohawk Valley.

I left in 95 and the APA had devastated the economy inside the Blue Line, *Adirondack Park” for non NY Freepers) with enviro regs. That communist bunch could give the EPS/Interior/BLM lessons.

NYC’s demands on everything north of them was crippling the rest of the state and Albany was all too happy to give them the store.

I miss the geography and the seasons, but I’ll never go back. It’s every bit as bad as Cali.

Oh, no.

They've got a cool art museum.

And it's the hometown of Annette.

In honor of the Utica Club Brewery, these protesters should call themselves “Eunuch Aklub.”

I spent 5 years in Ithaca in elementary and junior high school from ‘60 to ‘65. One of my Dad’s good friends lived on Texas Lane and he switched the letters on his mailbox to read “Taxes Lane.” I still remember the adults constantly complaining about sending all their money to the sewer NYC. Some things never change.

Valley Forge is the scene of the famous painting of General Washington on his knees in the snow, praying for his troops.

That was the winter of 77-78; a time, said Thomas Paine, “that tried men’s souls.”

As long as the weather permits .... what a pathetic bunch of whiny wimps. When the weather gets really cold, they might try the proven union method of protesting ... hire some people to walk the protest lines. Best if you prepare the signs that they will carry in advance as most of the hires are not big on spelling and remembering the cause. Best to have them carry the signs and shut up.
