EDINBURG Mexican federal authorities arrested a suspect who fled to Mexico Wednesday morning after he allegedly shot a man and stole his truck in Edinburg.
Mexican soldiers arrested the suspect and another man as they crossed the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge because they were in possession of a firearm, which is illegal in Mexico, Edinburg police Lt. Oscar Treviño said. Police did not release the mens identities.
Edinburg investigators believe the handgun found inside the stolen truck those two men drove was the one used in a shooting earlier that day in the 1000 block of Denver St. in Edinburg.
Investigators responded to a home there, where they found a 37-year-old man lying in a pool of blood. Police later determined the shooting stemmed from a drug-related altercation between the victim, who remained hospitalized Thursday, and one of the men detained by Mexican authorities.
Investigators worked to determine if and how the second man detained in Mexico became involved, Treviño said. They received conflicting reports about the number of suspects present during the shooting.
Treviño said the suspects will probably stay in Mexico to face criminal charges there before they can be held responsible for the shooting in the U.S. The shooting suspect is a Mexican national.
Investigators are also working with Mexican authorities to recover the stolen maroon Chevrolet Silverado, he added.
It’s never been safe but it’s far worse these days than ever before.
That statement is just toooooooooo easy. I'm not even going there.
Not going there either. Mexico, that is.
