An Interior Department official said Thursday the agency will ask independent experts to review allegations by a federal judge that the testimony of two department scientists was so inconsistent and contradictory it amounted to deliberate deception.
U.S. District Court Judge Oliver Wanger attacked the credibility of the biologists last month shortly before retiring from the bench. At a hearing on a motion in a court case involving delta smelt protections, Wanger called one of the scientists a "zealot" and accused the agency of engaging in "bad faith."

Go Judge Wanger!
So, now will the San Joaquin Valley farmers get their water?
when it falls from the sky..
Hope they get their water and a hold of the lying scientist........if you follow my drift.
Mmm, dip some smelt, cure and smoke, and you have the beer drinker’s best friend. The smelt don’t care what happens to the water once they’ve swam through it, only that they have some water to live in. Confine them mechanically to points upstream, and they could care less where the water goes.
When I went to the Times: there was a lovely picture of the delta smelt juxtaposed to a Rubios Fish Taco add.
Does anyone know who the scientist are? I read the article but it was short on details.
IF we would put a stop to phony Agenda-Driven Experts that do this crap and make them pay out of their own pockets, they would think twice about coming up with half-assed logic to cost millions to un-protected consumers, AND Taxpayers.
Why everyone ‘knows’ it is impossible for scientists to be so wrapped up in a cause that they would fudge their reports.
All you have to do is look at the climategate scandal.
AS Adrian Monk would say, “Here is the problem.” Where is the story that Republican lawmakers had their science people at the table to rebut the Interior Department - where is the big show on Captial Hill of growers who lost their business or workers who lost their jobs...republcians can’t learn a single lesson about media control media message etc. etc. They manage to have a hearing and nobody in fly over country will know it happened - tree forest sounds.
I have the feeling that the “delta smelt” is literally a man made problem.
Before farmers entered the “big valley”, all of the rivers were intermittant — snow was deposited on the mountains in the winter, and melted in the spring, producing large water flow. When the spring melt was finished, with quite intermittant rain, rivers shrank to very low flows. If the “delta smelt” existed at that time, it adapted to those conditions.
Then came the great dams and aquaducts to provide for irrigation of the best farmland in the world. The dams stored the spring melt and provided the water for irrigation during the entire growing season; as a result, there was a higher overall flow year round, resulting in either enlarging of the existing delta smelt population, or the migration of the delta smelt to an environment in which they could thrive for decades.
During the recent period of dryer years, the year round flow decreased, and now the environmentalists (who ignore what the environment was like before the dams were built) suddently discover a decreasing delta smelt population ... and raise the alarms, and present a one sided story; a judge listens to them and shuts down irrigation ... which was the reason that the delta smelt population was able to become high in the first place.
In a way, you can’t blame the judge — he was not provided with the full story; and justice, like computer software, is subject to the law of “Garbage in, Garbage out”.
I think you have done the kind of research that escapes the republican law makers.
The “Delta Smelt” is imported from the east, not native to California. Same as the striped bass.
it is merely a bait fish. Enviro nut jobs have sued and cut off water from the Central Valley (which is the bread basket of the US) and destroyed the farms and much of the food production there. This of course led to high unemployment there about 20-30% This is a disgrace!
