If Tuesday night’s Republican debate is a sign of things to come, the next campaign boom might be coming from Newt Gingrich.
The former speaker turned in his best debate performance so far in a New Hampshire forum hosted by Bloomberg News and the Washington Post, and Gingrich might already be experiencing the kind of surge that lifted Herman Cain to the top of the polls in the weeks since the Sept. 22 FOX News/Google debate if more Republicans could have seen the show.
It makes sense, because it was the ideal environment for him: a policy-driven discussion on fiscal and economic matters with questioners who were coming from the heart of the establishment press.
Gingrich went hard after the premise of the very first question to him, which was a restatement of the core grievances of the Occupy Wall Street movement: “Do you think it's right that no Wall Street executives have gone to jail for the damage they did to the economy?”
Frontrunner Mitt Romney and others did not want to kick the same tripwire that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor did when he referred to “mobs.” Romney explained that “the reason that you're seeing protests, as you indicated, on Wall Street and across the country is, middle income Americans are having a hard time making ends meet.”
Gingrich stipulated that there were some legitimate protesters but then hammered “left-wing agitators who would be happy to show up next week on any other topic” and leave trash and disruption in their wake. Gingrich then explained that, “in both the Bush and the Obama administrations, the fix has been in. And I think it's perfectly reasonable for people to be angry. But let's be clear who put the fix in: The fix was put in by the federal government.”

Newt does know the ropes. He is a part of the Establishment, like Romney.

On the downside, few if any people actually got to hear him speak.
Not such a tough choice. It is far more likely that Cain will improve his debating skills than that any of the aforementioned three will improve their core values.
Newt always knocks it out of the park. He must have a photographic memory, and how anyone could even compare, or suggest any other candidate on the stage holds a candle to his skills on the debates is laughable. I think the bar for Newt must be set higher, or it’s his baggage, political and personal.
Most people following this know Newt can debate and knows his facts. Few of those people plan on voting for him. He’s a congressman for crying out loud. They make notoriously bad presidents. And I saw, with my own eyes, him sitting next to Pelosi extolling the validity of AGW. There is no way I’d vote for that guy as president. I’d stay home.
Romney believes in global warming - Romney healthcare was the forerunner of Obamacare. Don’t think he is the ideal conservative canidate. Newt ran a very conservative congress when he was speaker.
Most people following this know Newt can debate and knows his facts. Few of those people plan on voting for him. He’s a congressman for crying out loud. They make notoriously bad presidents. And to give it context, I was a huge supporter of him back in the 90’s. On certain things I still am.

If he pulls his support from Romney and Perry, I’m all for this.
Liberal candidates debate before liberal moderators in debates hosted by liberal organizations, whereas candidates who claim to be conservative debate before liberal moderators in debates hosted by liberal organizations. Why do they play along?? I realize one candidate can’t stand alone on this issue, that’s the same as withdrawing from the debate to his detriment. But why don’t all or at least the vast majority of the candidates agree amongst themselves that in any debate, the moderators will be well-known conservatives and the debate will be held in a conservative venue??
"Middle income?" I'd wager that very few of them have ever paid taxes or held a real job in their lives. Just a bunch of young, angst-driven, socialist losers -- about as far from middle America as is possible.
Romney evidently has decided not to wait for the general before making a mad dash to the far left.
Newt did an ad with Pelosi (on a couch) about global warming. Newt also poked the TEA Party and other conservatives over healthcare and other things, calling the opposition “Right Wing Social Engineering.”
We're not going to find one person who is the best in both. At least in this group.
However, I'd rather compromise on debating skills first, core values second. Romney gets a veto because of core values. Perry gets a veto because of lack of articulation. So it's a choice of who's left.
Cain, Bachmann, Newt, Paul is pretty much my order.
However, Perry can improve and join the list, but this is becoming less likely.
