Soviets Occupy People's Republic of Aspen

Well, I stand corrected.

No sooner had my last column hit TH than I saw that some of the Occupiers were in fact moving to occupy Aspen, Colorado, a place, as Steve Martin reminds us, where rich kids with a sense of entitlement clash with developers with a sense of condominiums.

I wonder: Do the good people in Aspen wonder if this is what they voted for in 2008?

As I understand it, the Soviet OSW occupiers are moving to smaller towns across the United States.

Apparently the effort is on to spread the revolution with self-appointed committees formed in soviets issuing demands.

Don’t worry. I am sure it is coming to your town soon, if it has not arrived already.

It’s been interesting to note that these members of the never-tolerant left have called Tea Partiers all manner of vile names, proving that even if the Tea Party and OWS could have some common ground, the OWS crowd is so mired in its propaganda it cannot even engage in a civil conversation

I’ve heard many of the apologists for OWS romanticize the movement and canonize them as new Founding Fathers. But as I write this I am listening to a recording on the Tom Sullivan show which alleges that SEIU has been setting up the whole OWS movement in order to transfer the money to where SEIU needs it to be.

If the audio is legit, then these new Founding Fathers are indeed working for The Man.

I’d almost feel sorry for them if it were not for one nagging question: Where are they going to draw the line of hate? When they are done venting their ire on the millionaires and billionaires? On whom will they turn their guns next?

Let us not forget that these people have been asking for free food, free sleeping bags and free whatever-they-want. And these are the same people who have been using the bathrooms of nearby businesses, some of whom are sympathetic, but many others want no part of this demonstration.

And therein hints the note of caution.

Clearly, these people are interested in more than whatever nebulous cause they are supporting at the moment. They feel entitled to whatever it is someone else has.

Victor Davis Hanson has raised an interesting point. The flash mobs that were making the news before OWS sprang up were not stealing canned food, or warm clothes for the winter or even copies of Das Kapital. They were stealing luxury items. Under the banner of economic justice, the OWS crowd is really saying “Give us that which is yours.”

OWS is the logical result of years of the entitlement mentality. Granted this movement has been Astroturfed, but it was Astroturfed by people who saw a willing mob to go forth to do its will.

As OWS spreads across the United States to other places, including the smaller hamlets small business owners should ask a question. You job creators, you economy stimulators, you who spend money in your own towns ask yourselves: How long until OWS shows up at your door? How long until the local Soviet tells you that you must give up that which for which you have worked?

It’s one thing when the millionaires and billionaires are getting theirs- but can anyone honestly believe that this movement is going to stop with them? All politics after all are local.

And does anyone truly think that the small businessman or businesswoman is not going to wake up one day and find demands that they give all their employees raises that they cannot afford, hire whoever they are and pay more taxes despite whatever investments in the community that they may have already made. Now that the ball has been rolling we could see a veritable witch hunt as to which company, and which person constitutes the one percent of haves in our society.

The day may come when the folks who are not too big to fail but thought they were too small to matter may well find themselves on the business end of this movement.

And so too, eventually, will the organizers themselves.

Well, the weather has turned in the high country. Any “occupiers” in Aspen better have a nice warm condo under contract.

I wonder if the occupiers are demanding free lift tickets?? After all, the dirty, rich elite that work can afford lift tickets so the occupiers should receive them too. I think I saw that somewhere in my copy of the Communist Manifesto here...let me find the page...

I'm picturing a slightly less than fully agile 49 year old rising from a ravine-sliding his BB in pocket after checking the TWC and his gps:

"WOLVERINES!!!!"

...In the early days of World War III, guerrillas - mostly 45 TO 70 YEAR OLD peeps - placed the names of their lost upon this rock. They fought here alone and gave up their lives- because they could still reason and think (and tv was getting so bad! I mean who writes that sh1t anymore!? Children?! And my a55 itches when I sit too long...), so that this nation shall not perish from the earth. "Hope I'm still able to walk when these sh!ts are able to actual have something of value they worked for..."

It’s one thing when the millionaires and billionaires are getting theirs

Uh, no, it ISN'T. Going after the millionaires and billionaires for no reason other than that they are wealthy is WRONG. It cannot be justified or excused. It is the first step towards socialism, and must be condemned whenever it happens.

The problem in all of this is the government, and in the failure to apply the rule of law to everyone equally.

Remember, only about 10% of the Russian citizens were Communist Party members. It may just “Take a Village” to overturn this Republic if we are not vigilant.Soros always made certain that he had his forces in place before he went ahead with his final overthrow plan. Cuidado!!!

They feel entitled to whatever it is someone else has.

Yep. Covetousness. Their neighbors have a cooler Techno-toy than they do. "It isn't fair."
They're not willing to lift one of their own fingers to do all the hard work everyone else has done.

Let them freeze in the streets. Maybe they'll figure it out on their own. They're obviously not willing to listen to the adults. They'll have to learn the hard way.
It's time for a little "tough love." It's time to cut off their government allowance for their own good.

But also remember that Russian society had no history of democratic/representative institutions, and no comprehension of the notion of "inalienable rights". They were also very, very poorly informed, and lacked the sort of organizing capability that the Bolsheviks had.

If OSW continues to develop, beyond the point of being a simple nuisance, they're going to run straight into a solid brick wall. A very well ARMED brick wall operating under the principle of "Our Liberties We Prize, and Our Rights We Will Maintain".

The question is how far will they be allowed to go before they see that “brick wall”?

Look to the results of the French or Russian Revolutions. When they run out of the rich, there's always each other.

Well, there's really three ways this can go (imho):

Winter sets in and the protesters decide that whatever it is they're protesting isn't worth frostbite and hypothermia, and leave.

The protesters stick to basic trespassing and are otherwise non-violent (the violent ones being removed and getting to "wise up" courtesy of the prison population). IOW, they just remain a nuisance.

They expand and escalate their tactics.

In the case of the latter coming to pass, my guess is that it'll take another Kent State. Either by Law Enforcement/Military ... or by some manner of an armed citizenry that is confronted in an, er, unfortunate manner.

On another thread someone pointed out that 60s protester violence (specifically riots) came to an abrupt halt once heads started exploding at Kent State. For the vast majority of the dissatisfied youth crowd, seeing the head of the person next to you get explosively opened like a ripe cantelope courtesy of a high-velocity rifle round is going to be a great motivating force for finding some other way to spend their time.

Of course only a sociopathic lunatic (paging Professor Ayres, paging Professor Ayres. Professor Ayres, please pick up the white courtesy phone) would look forward to that sort of thing. But if these protests expand and escalate that's probably where we're headed.

Hmmm. It would be fun to see them pick the wrong kind of small town.

“Bunch of smelly commies? Nope. Never saw them at all. Maybe they passed through during the night. No? They just vanished? How ‘bout that! Well, good luck, Mr. Soros.”

Looks like NYC is expecting rain today, tomorrow, and especially Friday.

“Hey, mom, I’ll be coming home for the next few days. The Revolution is having a rain delay.”
