There was one clear winner from Tuesday's Republican presidential debate, based on the simple metrics of name recognition: businessman Herman Cain's "9-9-9 Plan."
Virtually all the candidates at the debate table had something to say about Cain's plan to replace the tax code with three, flat nine-percent federal taxes on consumption, business and income. Cain, once delegated to the remote wings of the debate stage, has enjoyed a surge in the polls ever since he won the straw poll in Orlando, Fla., last month, and at the first debate since he joined former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry in the top tier, Cain and his policy proposals took up more of the debate's time than the ideas floated by any other candidate.

We have to try. *Everyone* has to pay some federal income tax. I used to believe in our current progressive system. But now I see how dangerous it is. Every year, more and more people are falling off the federal tax rolls, leaving fewer and fewer of us paying the bills.
Currently I think it is approximately 47% who do not pay any federal income tax. In fact, many of them pay a “negative” tax (the Earned Income Tax Credit).
Guess what happens when a politician proposes more programs, more spending, higher taxes. Those 47% couldn’t care less. They have no skin in the game.
If you’re really worried about higher tax rates, just wait until the number of people who pay no federal tax goes above 50%. We’ll be forever outnumbered at the ballot box. Then it’s tyranny of the majority time. Game over.
I now believe every single working person should pay some federal income tax, regardless of income. It should be more than just a nominal amount, but not punitive. Just enough so that everyone will feel some pain when Fedzilla goes on a binge.
“I toss it out because it increases taxes on seniors, the average family, “the poor”, numerous small businesses, all businesses that operate at a loss, etc.”
In other words, it increases taxes on those that don’t pay taxes today. Gotcha.
“The empowerment zone stuff just shows that this isn’t an “everybody is equal” plan.”
Don’t confuse State, Local or city taxes with the federal system being discussed.
Taxes will go up only on those 47% who currently pay no federal income tax. And guess what? That don't vote GOP anyway.
However, once they do start pay something, some of them just might start voting GOP. Once they're finally forced to hand over some of their hard-earned cash like we are, they're not going to want to see it pi$$ed away by Fedzilla any more than we do.
How does this eliminate the IRS? Doesn’t some agency have to collect the taxes?
Good thinking on the angles of the Romney-Christie “deal”. I wonder if the cannoli had powdered sugar on them?
McCain v. Romney. I agree. The POW experience “got” JM. Although, it probably would get all of us too. Milt does make McCain look “better” by comparison.
And again, I think Mitt has “the fix” in with several of the candidates, Bachmann and “I'm Gonna Git You Sucka” Cain among them.
I suspect Sarah P. will come out and endorse the candidate she has previously endorsed, Rick Perry. That being said, dammit, he better learn how to speak and debate! I can't see her backing Milt or his pal Hermie.
I come away from the debate very impressed by Newt. He would skin, fillet, marinate and grill Soetoro like fresh road kill.
Still waiting for Hermie to take on Milt...
The fact that they still don't go after Romney is starting to look suspicious to me.
Palin’s best bet maybe is to nominate someone who doesn't get the nomination, that way it doesn't look as bad when they turn out bad. She can then say 'I told you so'. much like the Senate vote on ‘Obama’ jobs bill, One analyst said that less Dem Senators would have voted for it if they thought it might actually pass.
Some thoughts that should help Herman Cain in the future:
1) Don’t forget to remind people that 9-9-9 is just an INTERIM STEP towards a consumption tax. He never mentioned that.
2) When people ask “what happens when congress wants to raise the 9% sales tax” the answer is “the American people will go ape-shot mad about it and it won’t happen. (he alluded to this but didn’t do a very good job). He did say because of its transparency it will be hard to manipulate but this came off poorly. The answer is if Congress tries to raise 1% here or 1% there, it will effect EVERYONE. It won’t be CLASS WARFARE. The cost of milk and bread will go up, or the money you take home will go down.
Here is a slogan I just came up with - 9-9-9 Unifies All Americans Against Bad Government. 9-9-9 applies to everyone and any change to it effects everyone equally so Congress will not easily be able to change it without an uproar OR a broad consensus.
3) Repetition repetition repetition is important to get your point across. Cain like most smart men probably don’t feel the need to repeat themselves but in politics you are selling. Repeat it. 3 peat it if you can.
4) 9-9-9 does not equal 18% for individuals in the 15% bracket. It is 9% on income, and then 9% on what they choose to spend on new items not used goods as he mentioned. But the adding is incorrect it doesn’t work that way. It encourages savings and encourages a new used-goods market to grow. This = savings and jobs.
I have some other ideas and may take the time to post a vanity “Open Letter to Herman Cain” if I have time later today or in the coming days to bring out these points and others. I am not 100% sold on Cain but lean his way now that the field is pretty much settled. I don’t think America will replace Obama with a Perry-Cain or Romney-Cain but could vote for a Cain-Gingrich or Cain-Santorum (or Cain-Bachman even) if pitched as a package where the Veep is there to help deal with Congress.
“The fact that they still don't go after Romney is starting to look suspicious to me.”
BINGO! The fix is in. The question is: Will enough folks see it and react?
SP is an American patriot and I she knows this election is for (what's left of) the whole ball of wax. She's going to endorse the dog with the least fleas, who appears to be Perry. Although I suppose if Newt makes serious headway, she could back him.
pretty sure Cain wouldn’t be cool with starting NEW agencies. More likely he’d be with closing down agencies. Maybe he’d hire Bolton and they can end the UN.
Not really, you just issue deposits straight to the treasury. Rework how THAT agengy runs, streamline it and make IT more efficient and function as a collection agency. WIN/WIN
“You start by cutting the bloat in government,”
How do you expect to do that when the majority thinks that they do not pay any tax? I want every citizen to get smacked evry day with the cost of government largesse.
Perry has Mexican fleas and he is sending them to college.
You mean this patriot in the 'running' outfit?
“Perry has Mexican fleas and he is sending them to college.”
Yep. But again, being realistic, who else is there? Romney? Cain? RomneyCain? Bachmann? Paul? Santorum?
Nice pic!
I forgot: Newt.
