Perry on the Ropes?
National Journal ^ | Oct. 11, 2011 | Staff

Rick Perry’s six-foot frame seemed to slump in his chair during Tuesday’s Republican presidential primary debate, at a time when he should have been rising to the challenge.

The Texas governor sorely needed to notch a solid debate performance to arrest his freefall in the polls and reclaim his status as the biggest threat to the Republican to beat, Mitt Romney. He didn’t, reviving questions about his readiness for the national stage and raising new ones about his ability to sustain an initial, $17 million fundraising blitz.

Unlike previous debates, the eight Republican candidates on the stage in Hanover, N.H. were seated around a table instead of standing behind podiums. Perry fidgeted in his chair. He gave rambling responses, let Romney get off without a serious blow, and was caught on camera wincing in response to his rivals.

While Perry hoped to make the debate a referendum on one of Romney’s biggest liabilities – the similar requirements in the health insurance law he signed as governor of Massachusetts and the federal law President Obama’s enacted – there was far more discussion of the catchy “9-9-9’’ economic plan offered by his surging rival, Herman Cain.

When Perry finally had a chance to put Romney on the spot, the ex-Massachusetts governor delivered a strong counterpunch that took the sting out of the loaded question about his health care record. Turning the table, Romney said he was “proud’’ that he took on a major problem. He noted that his home state has the lowest number of uninsured kids in the nation, while Texas has the highest.

You would still have a greatly reduced income tax. Unless, of course, you are one of those living off the top 50%.

Nor does this mean the sales tax would go 9 to 10 to 11%. People don’t SEE their income tax. It is withheld, and a lot of folks look forward to getting a check from the government, never realizing that means they SENT a whole lot more to it.

With a sales tax, EVERYONE sees, daily, what they are paying in taxes. Getting a sales tax increased is tough, since those who do tend to get thrown out of office the next election.

National Review has been hawking Mitt Romney, used car salesman, since 2009. Their shameless promotion of this RINO motivated me to cancel my subscription after 30 years.

I wasn't able to see the debate last night, but I wouldn't trust a word they write about what occurred because they have Mitt so far up their collective butts that they've lost all sense of balance and objectivity. Screw them.

Anyone who listens to what NR has to say on this election must like Mitt because that's the only candidate NR is going to support.

Aw, for cripes sakes....I'm so pissed off at NR that I couldn't see that this is the National Journal, whatever the hell that is.

Time for a nap. But I still say screw National Review.....

No, actually he won’t be our next president. He will be like McCain but he will crash badly. The only thing that saved McCain from the most humiliating defeat in history is Palin and there is nobody out there who can do that for Romney. These candidates are not only assuring an Obama 2nd term, they are also making sure we don’t get a republican senate.

*** Perry can't answer a substantive question. ***

Not only that but he can't explain his OWN ideas. It's always some nonsense like, 'Well, look at what *we* did in Texas.'

Fine Gov, but whose *WE* Kemosabe? The Texas Legislature? The Lt Governor? Or do you have a mouse in your pocket Ricky?

Seriously. How can you go to a debate which you KNOW will be on the economy and not have a plan to spell out for America -- at least a part of it. That answer of his, 'We're working on it. ... I've 'only' been in the race for eight weeks.', was a Face Palm (oh crap!) moment. Honestly, the guy comes across as a complete Dunce.

And based on these four moronic and dunderheaded performances of his, I'm not so sure he should have access to firearms. At least when not supervised by an adult.

(no offense to Dunces & Dunderheads meant)

Really doesn’t take much of a crystal ball to know that Romney will never be president. They can’t make him exciting just like they couldn’t make McCain exciting and the media will turn on Romney the second he get nominated just like they did on McCain.

How could Perry go to a debate knowing its about the economy and not have a plan?

Actually his handlers had him memorize the plan they put together for him.

But Perry got confused...he thought he had accidentally wandered into an an audition for Dancing With The Stars.

He forget the details of the economic plan but his Texas two-step got him several calls from Bruno Tonioli.

"It does. The 9-9-9 plan is a transition to a pure national sales tax."

So why not go directly to a national sales tax and abolition of the income tax?

Good suggestion for your congressman. Transitions are usually to make things less abrupt.
