Quick and dirty debate after-report: Perry Performance
Michelle Malkin Web Site ^ | October 11, 2011 11:01 PM | Michelle Malkin

To be fair, if you and I had to be up on stage with Charlie Rose and Karen Tumulty, we’d be soporifically stupefied after a few minutes, too. But then again, we’re not running for the highest office in the land and raising millions of dollars from people across the country who are counting on a candidate with the guts, gall, and gumption to take on Barack Obama. By those basic measures of fitness for office, Rick Perry once again failed to deliver. He was languid. Passive. Half-hearted. Listless. Just like he was during the 9/23 debate.

I like Rick Perry and how he has nurtured the 4 aces he was dealt with and not squandered that advantage. If only he was better in debates, this would have been over by now.

Perry looks to be done. Three failed debates with out any improvement is an immediate disqualifier in a race to defeat Obummer. There is only one thing that leaves a little hope for him. This debate had zero viewership and the next one might be better for him, but judging by this lackadaisical performance here, I doubt it.

That and the $17 million he has extracted from donors last quarter.

Perry needed to look good in that debate, but he didn’t.

I don’t think we have ever seen a candidate who has been more controlled by high priced political handlers and consultants. Everything is scripted and rehearsed. In the debates, when they are forced to let him out to speak to mass audiences, he looks like a puppet — a stiff, vacuous Ken-doll.

He’s too controlled. It’s weird that he hasn’t made the rounds on the political television shows. We see Herman Cain interviewed on some show or another almost everyday, but we never see Rick Perry. Perry’s handlers don’t trust him enough to let him speak for himself.

Every answer Perry gave was rehearsed, but it looked like they ran out of practice time because he was totally unprepared. He didn’t have very much variation — almost every answer was about some vague, unarticulated energy policy that is going to be his answer to everything. Like a recalcitrant student who didn’t get his term paper done on time, he promised he would turn in his economic plan in the next three days but wasn’t read to talk about it yet — in the debate that was dedicated to only economic issues.

Perry is a mess. I can’t imagine this clown as President.

As far as I’m concerned, Perry is done. The right thing for him to do now is to return the campaign money he has left, but the high priced and useless handlers would never let him do that.

I just finished reading Malkin’s book, Culture of Corruption. I am amazed how brilliant this woman is and her research in putting this book together is phenomenal.

Money doesn’t always means success. Just ask Myth about what all his money did for him in ‘08.

No kidding. I have had a lot of success, just no money!

Let me guess: The Perrywinkles will now declare Michelle Malkin a RINO and someone who wants Obama to win in 2012.

That boy grew up in a hard-scrabble town in Texas... Which 4 aces are you talking about?

He's running for president from Texas, as a republican, having been a Gore delegate.

Exactly which 4 aces, again?

I do despise Gov Goodhair, for reason. Personal, that.

But he is my bastard, and if someone is going to foul-mouth him, I'll know the reason, or claim they are tools of the opposition.

I’m starting to think Haley Barbour made a mistake in not running. He would’ve CREAMED Milt Romney in a debate and is a fundraising machine.

“Three failed debates with out any improvement is an immediate disqualifier in a race to defeat Obummer.”

I’m not disputing your statement, but I would love to see it quantified.

Really, how important are the debates to the final outcome? I can’t find any research on that. I believe Gore did much better than Bush with independents, and less Dems watch the debates than Repubs. I just not convinced they are quite as important as most FReepers seem to think.

Wrong. He was better prepared for this debate. But there’s certainly room for improvement.

Perry is a redux of Bob Dole’s campaign. Prior to the primary and general elections Dole was noted for his acerbic wit, but his handlers must have curbed his use of that wit and Dole came across as a cardboard figure.

Texas 4 aces:
No state income tax...only 5 or 6 states can claim that, and none of the populous ones. That is the main reason why I live in a no state income tax state.
Major resource of oil and gas.
Texas has passed Tort reform, the only major state to do so.
Texas also benefits from military presence in the state.

I agree with David Freddoso: “Perry played it safe and lost.”

I asked for Perry's 4 aces that you bragged about.

You blathered some limp 4 for Texas.

BTW, we don't have an income tax here because it's unhealthy to folks in Austin.

Seriously.

Nixon lost to Kennedy in 1960 mainly due to debate performance. That election should never have been so close to allow Cook county to steal the election.
Reagan helped himself in both elections with superior debate performance.
Bush-41 looking at his watch during the debate killed his chances.
Bush-43 performed good enough in both elections, to neutralize his opponents.

Are you kidding me? 90% of voters are not political junkies. They mainly tune in to the one on one presidential debates to decide their choice. Those TV debates are huge.
