HANOVER, N.H. (AP) -- Presidential challenger Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama of failing to lead in a time of economic peril but sounded less conservative than his Republican rivals in their debate Tuesday night, defending the 2008-2009 Wall Street bailout and declaring he could work with "good" Democrats.
Romney also gave one of his most spirited defenses of his health care initiative when he was Massachusetts governor, legislation that Obama has called a partial blueprint for his own national overhaul. By positioning himself closer to the political center on several points, Romney sought to underscore his claim that he can draw crucial independent voters in next year's general election.
His chief rival, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, seemed less sure-footed. He repeated his main talking points about free enterprise but did little to dent Romney.
Former pizza company executive Herman Cain, who has climbed in polls lately, got more air time than usual. He repeatedly touted his call for replacing the U.S. tax code with a 9 percent national sales tax and a 9 percent levy on personal and corporate income.

Yes, the relationship between Romneycare and Obamacare was stated, but Romney simply re-inforced the very thing that concerns most of us, Obamacare in any form.
Romney made robo calls with Christie today to independents and basically said that he was a moderate and that he could work with Democrats.
The Democrats will vote heavily in the Republican primaries and will get Romney nominated. They did it at least once before and gave us McCain as the Democrat nominee in the Republican Party. The Democrats, at least in this area, knew way before the Republicans did, that the kenyan was the Democrat winner in the 08 primaries. There was no reason to vote in the later Democrat primaries so many Democrats re-registered as Republicans.
Perry attacked himself with his own blithering idiocy and nonsense answers.
If Romney is nominated than all hope is lost. The GOP elite have a firm grasp on control and will never relinquish it.
I would very strongly urge my fellow conservatives to take action and begin the process of starting a third party. I know some conservatives may say its foolish but it is probably the last hope for the republic.
Our voices will never be heard among the mating calls of the rinos.
Of course you can RINO and Obama mini me. =.=
Perry obviously did poorly in the earlier debates, but he did very well tonight.
Romney revealed himself to be just another RINO middle of the roader who just wants to revise Obamacare, repeal it and then revise it. Yeah, right.
I saw Romney fake cry during a speech to the state GOP convention and I will never, ever believe anything he says.
I don’t think Romney wold do us any good even on USSC nominations.
I would tend to agree.
but we want to know: can you work with conservatives?
It’s like Rush said, this endorsement has been long planned. Christie and Romney did robo calls together today to independents, saying how they moderate they both are and how they can work with Democrats because they both come from Blue states.
Basically Romney said that the only thing about them that was conservative was that they both wanted to cut spending.
Best. Comment. Ever.
Perry didn’t get too mch time to talk but I bet we will be hearing a lot more from him and he still has time to dent Romney really well.
On the other hand, where the heck was the “going after Romney tonight” Cain?
Good one! Thanks.
“Nobody cares if Romney is Mormon, they care that he’s a creep. “
I wish it were true that “nobody cares if Romney is Mormon”; however, some of the anti Mormon comments I have read on this site prove you to be wrong.
The more things change....the more they stay the same!
Not surprising seeing that he is a demorat.
