Want to Get Fat on Wall Street? Try Protesting
New York Times ^ | October 11, 2011 | JEFF GORDINIER

Posted on 10/11/2011 3:16:09 PM PDT by reaganaut1

AFTER nearly two weeks of living among the Occupy Wall Street protesters in downtown Manhattan, Ellis Roberts, 25, a Pennsylvania garbage collector laid off last year, looked scruffy and dazed.

He was not, however, hungry.

“I’ve been here for 12 days, and I’ve put on 5 pounds,” he said, sitting on the ground in front of a handmade sign that said “Class War Ahead.” “I’m eating better than I do at home.”

Like the rest of his anti-corporate comrades, Mr. Roberts learned soon after arriving in Zuccotti Park that his meals would be taken care of. All he had to do was amble toward a ramshackle cluster of tables and boxes in the middle of the park and, without paying a cent, grab a slice of pizza or a warm slab of homemade vegan casserole. Last Thursday he had encountered “a bunch of Katz’s Deli sandwiches,” he said. “That was good.”

The makeshift kitchen has fed thousands of protesters each day. Along the way, it has developed a cuisine not unlike the Occupy Wall Street movement itself: free-form, eclectic, improvisatory and contradictory.

Requests for food go out on Twitter and various Web sites sympathetic to the protesters. And somehow, in spontaneous waves, day after day, the food pours in. The donations are received with enthusiasm, even when they are not precisely what the troops might have desired.

Robert Strype, 29, a protester from the Poughkeepsie, N.Y., area who was wearing a T-shirt that expressed his displeasure with Monsanto, said that anger about practices like factory farming and the genetic modification of vegetables was one of the factors that had roused him and some of his fellow occupiers. “Food plays a huge part in this movement,” he said. “Because people are tired of being fed poison.”

He's sitting around living off other people when he should be out looking for a job? I say let him rot there. I feel absolutely no pity for this lazy bum.

And scavengers.

Come to think of it, parasites and scavengers are pretty much what the Dems are all about anyhow, so I guess it’s fitting.

garbage collector laid off last year,

I'll bet he smells worse now than he did when he was working.

Wall Street Protesters - Pew!!! It's a filth parade (I hear they're giving out prizes to the most vile. Those with lice even get a free Oboma balloon.)

I've been to Katz's...it's awesome! Great pickle plates with every sandwich.

As for Mr. Strype, anyone who's read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" or seen "Food Inc." knows what he's talking about. I haven't had a fast-food burger in nearly ten years..

Man, don't tell me this is not Astroturfing.
Since the protests began in September, nearby restaurants have experienced a strange uptick in phone calls and online orders, many of them coming from other parts of the world. Telly Liberatos, 29, the owner of Liberatos Pizza on Cedar Street in the Financial District, said he has received orders from places like Germany, France, England, Italy and Greece, as well as every region of the United States.

“It’s been nonstop,” he said. “The phones don’t stop ringing. People from California order the most at one time.” Someone from the West Coast had called in the biggest delivery: he wanted 50 pizzas dispatched to the park. …

Now and then, the park’s kitchen gets lucky. Bob Reich, who once worked for Birdbath Bakery in Manhattan, appeared in the encampment a few minutes before 7 p.m. bearing bags of freshly baked cookies. “The ingredients are as organic as we can get them,” he said. The first few protesters in line for dinner would, it seemed, enjoy an upscale dessert course. Why had Mr. Reich made the effort? “Because I support what people are doing here,” he said. “And who doesn’t love a cookie?”
Upscale dessert course?? Money pouring in from all over the USA (but especially California) and overseas (mostly from EU countries)?

How ironic! While these idiots are protesting Wall Street greed or whatever, Barak bin laden, oh, I’m sorry, Obama, who support the idiots, collected millions from Wall Street rich-cats at a posh fund raiser. Gives new meaning to the word idiot.

It's bad enough these nuts are anti-American Marxists, but their means of support isn't even American.
Well, at least the tax payers get a break. Let someone else feed the scroungers for a change.

This is a big part of the revolutionary movement to Occupy...from our neighbors up North.

When protest leaders, groups from another country come to the US for anarchist reasons can they be arrested and sent back to whence they came? You won't see protesters from the US going into Iran etc having a good old "fun" time defecating on police cars.

These liberal mayors who welcome the protests and try to get along remind me, as I may have stated earlier; of the French government who rounded up the Jewish families for the Nazi Party [ The National Socialist German Workers' Party] and sent them to their deaths in concentration camps and worse---so the French themselves would be left alone--and it would eventually just all go away.[The Boy in the Striped Pajamas 2008]

And this:

"Ms. Ferrara said they had begun looking for a nearby kitchen they could use to prepare all the perishable food coming in; that might reduce the need to rely on takeout.“

“We do have it in our budget to rent a space in the area”

I wonder if this make shift kitchen is subject to the same health standards and inspections as others that feed the public. If not, perhaps Bloomberg should get on that.

After all, they might get too much salt.
