Now, 24 years after it was first started, the hotel which once aimed to be the world's tallest tower will finally open its doors in the North Korean capital.
Ryugyong Hotel, a glass tower spanning 105 storeys and rising 1,080ft high, will partially open in April next year following decades of delays, according to reports.
The long-delayed opening will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of the nation's founder Kim Il-sung, with celebrations peaking on 15 April.
It was in 1987 that the hotel whose name means Capital of Willows was first launched with the grandiose ambitions of creating the world's tallest tower.

P!
Well, I suppose the construction trailer could sleep at least two. Technically, that is “open.”
The all-you-can-eat buffet opens at 11 am and closes at 11:01 am, or when the grass runs out, whichever is sooner.
Soylent Green Salad Bar.
How would you make it safe?
You know EVERY room is bugged.
And what with the cost of manpower there you know you’ll get lots of service.
along with several hidden spycam's inside.
It wasn’t the North Korean economy that made this building take so long.
The project was run by Occupy Atlanta.
WE WILL NOW DRIVE THIS NAIL. (we will now drive this nail).
WE WILL NOW BRUSH THE PAINT. (we will now brush the paint)
IN AN UPWARD DIRECTION. (in an upward direction).
Its a foolproof building method.
Don’t laugh. You dare to laugh? To the gulag, you anti-social capitalist.
Just have Kim Jong Il make a declaration of the hotel’s absolute 100 percent safety and there will be no problems.
C’mon, this is the guy who on his very first golf game, hit something like a dozen holes-in-one, in a ROW!
Oh, sorry. That was a dozen HO’s in one, over a few weeks.
Close enough.
Hey Tiger,
They offering any scenic tours of the nuclear plant meltdowns yet?
Maybe Helicopter sightseeing rides?
I doubt he could do either. A dozen bottles of booze on the other hand.
They are getting there. Yongbyon nuclear complex is reportedly so decrepit that, by Western standard, it should have been closed down years ago for safety reason. I think they had a meltdown of sorts about 15 years or so ago at underground section of the facility. The ground temperature suddenly shot up pretty high at the time.
Their surface version could be: Chernobyl II. One reactor but fast meltdown and core explosion, while Fukushima is a slow motion train-wreck but has far large impact.
You can't take a tour unless you are heavily suited up. two inch full-body lead armor for starters.
Now who the heck is going to stay in it? There’s tons of other hotels that only have workers in them........This is one weird country.
Given the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) well known infrastructure problems, I would not trust the elevators at any time for fear of power failures. I would also have to wonder how far up the WORKING plumbing is available? You might call this ‘adventure camping indoors’ to book a room in this hotel!
Special unscheduled stops where the secret police can take you to a nearyby room for a minute or forever.
And that's if the damn thing ran at all. Imagine that building, with AC out, no elevators, spotty water, intermittent electricity....
I think I'll pass on that condo offer.
Earlier this year the regime announced it would shut universities for 10 months and send students to work in factories, agriculture and the construction sector to help rebuild its economy by 2012.
Hmm. Looks like Occupy Pyongyang! is... different.
