Well... Yes, and no.
What it did was separate the old Democratic Party of the 'good old days' of your parents or grandparents, like Law & Order Mayor Richard J Daley (who had one heck of a handgun collection), and the commieRAT scum infiltrators who finally took over the party in 1972.
Of course the Hippie Riot of Aug 26, 1968 did spell complete DOOM for any chance Humphrey ever had. So '68 was like the defining moment for the Dems.
Old man Daley was cool. His 'Shoot To Kill Order' during the MLK riots was the best thing I ever heard on TV. [he did like his Cops and Firemen getting shot at]. So he was nothing like his loony-tunes moonbat kid, Richie M Daley -- who must have been dropped on his head once too often in the HS showers of De La Salle 'Institute' (he got beat up quite often).
