MESQUITE, Nev, A 71-year-old student skydiver and her experienced instructor died Sunday after their parachute failed to open properly about 85 miles northeast of Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The pair jumped in tandem shortly before noon over Mesquite, Nev.
Police said after their main parachute failed to deploy, the instructor -- aged in his 60s with nearly 11,000 jumps to his name -- tried to open a back-up chute, but it was tangled and did not deploy properly.

Have a heart FReepers and lay off this. It is terrible
The difference is they get paid to jump out of that plane. Those thrill seeking jumpers pay to jump out, that’s what is so stupid.
“The difference is they get paid to jump out of that plane.”
they get paid and they do it to serve our country. If they died while jumping, they died for our country.
It isn’t stupid. A moment of respect would be appreciated.
It is terrible which is why we don’t want any freepers to do it!
Harry Reid will be saddened by two less supporters.
When I told my Mom I became a member of Skydive Arizona she said “I don’t want to know” GOD keep your arms wrapped around her.
How sad..
All men live enveloped in whale-lines. All are born with halters round their necks; but it is only when caught in the swift, sudden turn of death, that mortals realize the silent, subtle, ever-present perils of life. And if you be a philosopher, though seated in the whale-boat, you would not at heart feel one whit more of terror, than though seated before your evening fire with a poker, and not a harpoon, by your side.
Moby Dick, Chapter 60 The Line
It isn’t good. I actually cried with this. It’s close. Oh My!
but I don’t understand what is the point of it?
It’s fun when it works but the idea of falling only to find your chute doesn’t work and you know you’re going to crash straight into the ground at full speed sounds like the worst possible way to go.
Well...do you really know if it's a "perfectly good" airplane?
I mean, planes crash all the time. Might be a good idea to have a chute.
” aged in his 60s with nearly 11,000 jumps to his name”
Assuming that he had been jumping for 50 years that comes to an average of four jumps per week. Phew.
You don’t think that paying someone $300-400 to jump out of their airplane just for some kind of thrill is stupid? I do.
Well, you picked the right thread on time :)
I was old school. I walked the wing and went off by myself. Just get those chutes open and listen. It is a blast but you better have a steady head. When they tell you to let go at 5000ft, it’s all you. Hang on
The older I getthat sentiment NEVER appears rewarding!
That’s why I quit frying scorpions on Sunday.
Getting more than 12 feet off the ground should be forbidden.
