Is the Tea Party Over?
New York Times ^ | 10/9/11 | Bill Keller

Posted on 10/09/2011 7:25:05 PM PDT by DRey

The latest Fox poll offered Republican voters a menu of 11 candidates and found...not only were voters scattered across the conservative landscape, but 1/4 of the Tea Party adherents sampled were still “not impressed” with anyone. It’s hard to impress a movement that only knows what it is against. Now, barring some wild twist of fate, there are two men standing: Mitt Romney, the methodical, thrill-free, ideologically elastic technocrat from Massachusetts, who has made himself the default nominee; and the last hope of the hard core, the Not Mitt: Rick Perry.

snip

...whatever you think of his deviations from Tea Party purity, they make some sense in the context of Texas. His decision to let children of illegal immigrants attend state colleges at the in-state tuition rate, which so scandalizes the zero-tolerance conservatives, is conventional bipartisan pragmatism in Texas. The logic is: if the federal government can’t keep illegals out, it’s not our fault, but we can at least steer them away from the welfare rolls or jails and into productive lives.

snip

In this race, Rick Perry is the Tea Party’s dream candidate, the one remaining figure who could translate a noisy backlash into serious power. If Rick Perry loses, the Tea Party will have missed the opportunity of a lifetime. If he wins, Perry being Perry, it’s not entirely clear whether he will appease its members, but my guess is he’ll try. “Rick Perry is the only candidate who would actually close down a cabinet department,” one longtime admirer told me, when I asked whether a President Perry would disappoint the Tea Party. “You would see a very happy base — at least for the first term.”

In a nutshell: if Romney wins, Tea Party goals are toast. Perry is best hope for winning and fulfilling Tea Party aspirations. But make no mistake, this guy hates Perry. The last sentence of his article: The rest of us are left to recall the advice handed down 10 years ago by the late, wisecracking Cassandra of Texas politics, Molly Ivins: “Next time I tell you someone from Texas should not be president of the United States, please pay attention.”

Gotta hand it to Keller - he is certainly unafraid to reveal his utter cluelessness to the entire world.

Keller knows nothing, and he's proud of it.

Consider the source, i.e., New York Slimes.

"It’s hard to impress a movement that only knows what it is against."

Idiot leftist can't comprehend the concept of liberty. We're for constitutionally limited government.

Its not what I am against that does not interest me, its that they are not against what I am against or for what I am for. They are... politicians, wanting to be promoted to the Great Gravy Train Washington DC.

The only one that interests me at all is Cain, and there is plenty of time to get excited.

I want an AMERICAN in office. Not some Eurocrap or Marxist, or Muzzi. I want an American, from America that understands the difference between America and Europe, Asia/Russia or the MiddleEast.

You know, one Nation under God stuff.

I'm less than impressed with polling data at this point - Gingrich is still polling at 8%, and I didn't even realize he was still in the race (mmm, federal election laws that permit the withdraw of campaign funds equal to the salary of the office being sought...) Supposedly it's Romney/Cain/Perry at this moment in time, with Romney enjoying at least a Bachmann sized lead. How will it look like on the other side of November? Probably pretty similar, with Romney holding around 20%, and two other names following him.

Personally, I think the NY Times is doing what it normally does, trying to make lemonade out of a bad situation.. Make it between Romney and Perry, and send vile towards Perry, and the Republicans will be good boys and girls and gather to defend him, thus making that Cain guy go away.

Did Molly (Barfly) Ives say that? Usually Florence King had to say it first...

This Tea Party republican is happy with Herman Cain.

I am no longer allowing anyone, particularly media to suggest to me whom I should support.

The last thing America needs is another round of the same old sh!t.

Gee, we're supposed to take advice from the New York Slimes on their choice for the nominee?

In one corner, with great hair is the former governor of Massachusetts who helped pass the state model for ObamaCare.

In the other corner, the challenger, also with great hair is the current governor of Texas who would like to bankrupt the country even faster with amnesty for tens of millions of new socialist voting citizens.

That's just what the Perrywinkles tell us our choices are down to so we have to vote for their guy. No thanks.

Limited government, lower taxes and less regulation, free market solutions, honest government to name a few.

At least they all lean in a similar direction unlike the psycho left.

They want everything from rights for animals to pedophile marriage and free housing. Basically they’re both nuts and stupid.

The cool thing about the Tea Party is it WAS REAL. Liberals can’t pull that off - even their protesters are paid shills... There’s an ad on Craig’s List offering to pay up to $650 a week for “Occupy” protesters.

I saw Herman Cain on televison today--interviewed by some woman--didn't get her name. His IQ is at least three times hers. He is impressive. She looked like a fool.I'm sure she was just having a bad day.

Cain is dynamite!

He's the next President of the U.S.A.

Abiding by the constitution automatically gives us limited government, lower taxes, less regulation, free market solutions, honest government (if we impeach/remove the crooks), and individual liberty!

The constitution was designed to allow us to do all of that. We have failed to hold their feet to the fire.
