As someone who almost became a teacher I can tell you that in the old days this was done. It was a good thing too. It helped the teacher teach better. Of course I am referring to schoolmarm Miss Crum who taught Opie. Back then we had prayer, the Bible and the “board of education” in the classroom as well. Yes Miss Crum actually used her ruler once!
