Another prosperous city becomes a socialist utopia, followed by a slide into the economic crapper. Gosh, what a shocker.

More liberal/socialist whining. Socialism does not work — never has — so the first attempted “solution” is class warfare. Redistribution. etc etc etc.

It has almost the best weather in Canada. Better to be poor
in BC than in say Ontario with those killer winters.

Shooting den for drug injectors, lots of ganja..

All this crap about income inequality is nothing but liberal melodrama. In a fifteen trillion dollar economy, a few "millionaires and billionaires" more or less don't amount to a fart in a windstorm. The desirable effect of the economy is that the lower quintiles are gaining; the gains of the upper quintile are irrelevant to them.

...income disparity turns out to be a leading indicator of a society’s well-being, more than average income.

If you're looking for the root premise that leads to this nonsense, that's it. "Social well-being" is defined in circular terms - low income disparity cannot both be a measure of social health and a cause of it at the same time. If you hold both positions there's no way actually to prove or disprove the case, it reinforces itself.

To be sure, it is very difficult to come up with a measure of societal "well-being" that does not include one of the terms in question, and they're measures that often contain definitional cheats. For example, one common measure of the health of a society is infant mortality. Were abortion figures to be included the conclusion might well be - actually, it is - that a society permitting elective abortion is not, in fact, healthier than one that does not. Hence the definitional cheat: abortions don't count. The problem, for abortion advocates, has just disappeared, but so has the science.

Social science is not exempted from the general scientific rule that advocates may not be regarded as honest brokers. Its low reputation in the scientific community at the moment is due largely to the prevalence of that particular blemish; it is, after all, where the grant money is. The rest of us need not despair. There are good ones out there.

Vancouver has a new and dubious honor: it's the poverty capital of Canada.

Once the most beautiful city on the North American continent. Once.

In Vancouver, you have the highest Ratio: Median Home Price to Median Income, in North America. Higher than Manhattan, higher than the Toronto, Seattle, poshest metro areas of SoCal etc.

Hot money flows from Asia into RRE in Vancouver and coastal BC in the last 15 years have effectively evicted native born and immigrants from prior waves of immigration from being able to afford to live and raise families in the Vancouver city proper.

We’re experiencing a complete failure of social, economic, financial, trade, civic, political and bureaucratic systems manifest into a a new synthesis closer to a feudal system than ever seen north of the Rio Grande. (though not quite as bad as the system of slavery north of the Rio Grande of course)

Now the Supreme Court has opened the floodgates for millionaires and billionaires and giant corporations to pour unlimited amounts of cash into our elections, consolidating their hold on the political process and the corporate state.”

Can't have rich people politicking, unless it's Bill Moyers, who got rich sucking on the public teat, of course.

Vancouver is the only place in Canada where you don’t freeze your *ss off in the Winter. Add in the local attitude of tolerance for anti-social behavior and yet be surprised that every bum in the country heads there?
