Marine Lance Corporal Benjamin Whetstone Schmidt, 24, son of San Antonio Spurs doctor David Schmidt, and local counselor/therapist Becky Whetstone was killed in action Thursday in Afghanistan.
Schmidt, a graduate of Alamo Heights High School, spent some brief time at home in August before he embarked on his second tour of Afghanistan in September.
Scheduled to end his deployment in May 2012, Corporal Schmidt was killed from a gunshot wound to the head.

He volunteered for a the 4 month deployment with 2/4 Echo in Afghanistan from July, 2010 through October, 2010 at FOB Dwyer.
LCpl. Schmidt was famous in the battalion for wanting to carry a .50 cal Barrett on walking patrols. He reasoned that the enemy knew better than to ever shoot at a Marine carrying a Barrett as there is no chance of escape after a missed shot. It just made sense to him, regardless of the weight of the weapon and ammo.
LCpl Schmidt just deployed with 2/4 Echo to Camp Leatherneck and had been in country only 3 weeks. He was a scout/sniper, and very proud of that.
I talked to a friend of LCpl. Schmidt this morning who mentioned how happy and thrilled LCpl. Schmidt was to be in love for the first time and to have a sweetheart back home to write and talk to on this deployment.
Bless your heart LCpl. Schmidt, I only knew of you enough to know what a fine Marine and young man you were.
Semper fi, carry on
RIP and prayers.
In my opinion all of them are the finest.

In my opinion all of them are the finest.
The talent and humanity of Marines like LCpl. Schmidt and all our other service members that have been lost, is not replaceable.
Not a mistake. To me, worth repeating.

RIP. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
R.I.P. I didn’t see this news elsewhere. I so dislike this media.
God Bless you Benjamin. Rest In Peace and comfort to your family. Amen.
Prayers for this brave warrior and his grieving family and friends. “For those I love, I will sacrifice.” Semper Fi, Marine.
Prayers for his family and friends. May he rest in peace and his loved ones find comfort in God’s loving grace.
So sad.
Our lamestream media does suck, but sometimes the military wants to delay the release of news so that the families can prepare for the onslaught. A young friend of mine (Navy SEAL Caleb Nelson) was killed Saturday, Oct 1 but the Navy asked his family and friends not to post anything on line until the Navy released the information to prevent people like the Westboro Baptist Church whack jobs from finding out and making a tragedy even worse. The news of Caleb's death didn't hit the wires until about 36 hours afterward. Time to get his parents and wife to Dover AFB to wait for his body to come from Afghanistan. Too many of our finest young men have died this week. RIP L Cpl Schmidt.
Thanks for that info.
