The logical error in your argument is this: you are saying that because dipwads like Romney can develop delusions of grandeur, we should never admit that there could be great leaders.
There can be, and we need one now. Too bad that there is no one among those vying for the Stupid Party nomination who could be even a marginally adequate leader.

Our Lord does what He does, and Caesar does what he does. Nowhere that I have seen does Our Lord say, “If Caesar is a horrible tyrant, I’ll take care of it. You don’t have to do a thing.”
Has it ever occurred to you that the US (and the world) are under condemnation from God? That maybe we deserve what we are getting for turning our backs on Him?
