Yep, tell that to a mother of five who just lost her husband who was the only source of income of the family and who spent all their hard earned money on medical bills before his death.

Go tell her now that she is poor because she wants it that way. Good grief....

What about families who were, for generations, living in a town where there was only one employer who had to shut down the shop. Families stuck with mortgages on homes that have now no value. Go tell them to blame themselves.

What, she’s gonna sit there doing nothing? no preps made knowing he was on his way out? just “woe is me, it’s over”? At youngest, the oldest kid is over 10 (most likely in teens) - time to start contributing in earnest to household functions if not bringing income. When my metabolic continuation was in doubt, I made arrangements for “just in case”; your example demands the same. My 3-year-old is already learning to cook and clean. Kids can pitch in to help. I’m not saying it will be a comfortable life, but if she doesn’t figure it out and get herself & offspring busy, there won’t be any to continue. Good grief...

As for the second example? MOVE. Mortgages? that scenario is exactly why they’re a bad idea. Nonetheless, file the appropriate paperwork and get a bus ticket to someplace that’s happening. I moved a thousand miles with no known prospects, worked it out and now doing ok. Google “free land” and “Tumbleweed homes” for extreme viable options.

Both your examples indeed exhibit “yes, it’s your fault”. They knew what was coming, and didn’t take action to avert disaster. When disaster happens, there are still options. Life is hard. $#!^ happens. Plan for contingencies. Cope. Assess where you are and move on.

If there truly is need, there is family and friends and church to lean on for assistance (yes, I do my part therein - and my tagline is one of those parts). The issue isn’t so much whether someone _is_ poor, because sometimes “life happens” and events conspire to bring you down; the issue is whether someone _stays_ poor, refusing to tenaciously pursue the multitude of opportunities available.
