NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) Hey Big Apple: Disappointed with Apple?
While many New Yorkers were anticipating the reveal of the iPhone 5, Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook has instead unveiled the companys new iPhone 4S.
It is said to run seven times faster than its predecessor and has new mobile software that can sync content wirelessly, without having to plug an iPhone to a Mac or Windows machine.
The iPhone has gained millions of fans since the first model came out in 2007, thanks to its slick looks, high-resolution screen and intuitive software.
Apple has improved its camera function which can lock auto-focus on a single point in the frame, reduce red-eye and auto-enhance photos. The camera app will now also be accessible from the lock screen.

it’s probably safe to start shorting it. Jobs is not only gone, but I think he’s been sucking up to Obama. This is understood to be the kiss of death.
Whelming. Not over, nor under. Just plain whelming.
Yeah, Apple with their computers, ipods, iphones and ipads is just a flash in the pan and Apple will never be a major company in the United States.
Don't put words in my mouth you cultic moron.
The 4S may have some neat under-the-hood advances, but not really enough for the average iPhone user to go out of their way to upgrade. Cosmetically, it it IDENTICAL to the iPhone 4. That’s a major fauxpas.
If they’d have announced a significant price reduction, I’d be cheering. As it stands, *yawn* if not grinding teeth.
I followed a live blog of the Siri demo. If the demo is legit it’ll be the super-bomb.
Anyone have any insight on when the iPhone 5 will come out. I’ve been waiting patiently on Sprint for an iPhone, and when they finally get it, I have to decide whether to get a phone that is only a slight upgrade, or wait a little longer for the iPhone 5. I’m thinking we’re looking at next June for the 5, but that’s just a guess. Where did all these thin phone cases come from if it’s not imminent?
That was mind-blowing.
...like I or anyone knows for sure. I am sure that people lost bets today thinking iPhone 5 was the big announcement. Even the insiders blogging live were waiting for that “...and one last thing”, but it never came. There’s a reason tech companies never comment on upcoming product release speculation and why many are making a living circulating “rumors”.
I’m trying to figure out how the announced “4S” is different from what people expected from a supposed “5” model?
Dramatically faster CPU? Check.
Dramatically faster graphics? Check.
Dramatically improved camera? Check.
No loss in battery life? Check, I think.
Kick-a** new feature? Check, Siri.
CMDA/GSM integration? Check.
The only things that come to mind that the 4S doesn’t include that a “5” would have is:
* Different form factor.
* 4G network support. (No guarantee a “5” would have had this anyway)
So mark me down as thinking that the “disappointment” is over-reaction. I like the 4S and I hope to upgrade to one soon.
Despite my household having four MacBooks, four iPhones, Perhaps ten iPods and four iPads, I am not in the Apple Cult.
LMAO.....
bummer was looking forward to buying 5. :(
Thiner? Cases were said to have been leaked.
Edge-to edge screen?
No mention of enhanced gestures.
No mention of using buttons to take picture in camera mode.
True multitasking.
CHEAPER.
What they introduced was very nice.
iPhone 4S - expected, same kind of improvement of 3GS over 3G.
iOS 5 - nothing new. Looks great, Oct. 12 please get here already.
Cards app - very nice, pleasant surprise, makes me wonder what Apple _really_ has in mind for this, not prior being in competition with Hallmark.
Siri - sounds great, shades of Newton: awesome futuristic newness, we’ll see how it really works out. Seems damnyousiri.com has already been registered for that reason.
Nano - nice improvements.
Touch - broke the $200 barrier. iOS 5 on it is great - auto-syncing the 8GB version is big for me.
Overall spiffy stuff, yet lacked the *BANG* expected. “Let’s talk iPhones” implied more than just one new phone, although Siri brings “talk to the phone” to a new level.
Nice stuff. Now when can we have the new iPhone 5 and iPad 3?
That would be covered under "form factor".
No mention of enhanced gestures.
True. Was this a hot topic?
No mention of using buttons to take picture in camera mode.
That's already included in iOS5 for all compatible iOS devices that include a camera (everything but the iTouch 3).
True multitasking.
Ain't gonna happen, ever. Battery life takes precedence.
CHEAPER.
Also ain't gonna happen. Apple's price points tend to be very stable -- you just get a more powerful device for the same money. (Though they did add a new price point for the 64GB model.) The 4 is going to be a lot cheaper once the 4S debuts, though.
Windows Phone 7 Mango already has their version of it. Works great!
