Someone told me recently she liked reading my blog but it seemed like everything I wrote about was race. I guess Im going to live up to that persons perception today. Admittedly, I write from the perspective of a black woman, so I cant help notice these type of stories. For the record, the purpose of my blog is to educate people on politics, awaken black liberals to a new way of thinking and encourage people to vote based on issues not party.
I dont intentionally sit down at the key board each week itching to write about the intersection of politics and race, but it seems there is always a politically racial story staring and at times smacking me in the face. Like today, when the only black Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said it was "insulting" for Governor Rick Perry and his family to lease a hunting camp in Texas known as Niggerhead.
This racist word used to describe blacks is emblazoned on a rock prominently situated at a gated entrance to the camp. The Washington Post broke the story, detailing how the rock has been painted over, turned over but not removed since Perrys father and later the governor himself began leasing the spot in 1983.
Cain condemned Perry for being associated with such a word, saying on This Week:
"Since Gov. Perry has been going there for years to hunt, I think that it shows a lack of sensitivity for a long time of not taking that word off of that rock and renaming the place. . . .Yes, it was painted over. But how long ago was it painted over? So I'm still saying that it is a sign of insensitivity."
One would think conservatives, including those who call themselves Republicans like me and Tea Party Patriots, would be applauding Cains response. After all, many of these same conservatives have said they whole hearted support of Cain as a candidate has nothing to do with the color of his skin but his positions on ALL issues, one would assume they would be supportive of Cains position on racial equality and inclusion.
So, you can surmise I was surprised when people on my tweeter stream turned on Cain, blasting him for using the race card. Yes, these good PATRIOTS who supported Cain were now defending Perrys complicit endorsement of the use of the N-word by not removing the ugly rock form the camp site.
One true patriot tweeted: "Turns out Cain is no different than members of Congressional Black Caucus. He should apologize to Governor Perry #tcot #teaparty #Perry2012"
But the tweets below are worse and demonstrate conservative voters need to come to grips with the reality that we live in the 21st century where there is no place for the word nigger in the American discourse nor should it be associated with any presidential candidate who actually wants to win in 2012.
"Herman Cain playing the race card on Rick Perry will end the Cain campaign. And it was totally unnecessary, too. WaPo carrying that water" said one tweet.
"@TheHermanCain Sorry you have turned out to be just another race baiter. Thought we were trying to get rid of that stuff. Thks, but no thks" said another tweet.
"@impoTex @TheHermanCain The GOP cand. should renounce this kind of slanderous reporting. Mr Cain I have lost respect for you, fueling this" another tweet reads.
It truly boggles the mind how some conservatives can support Cain in one breath because hes got winning solutions then dump their support for him and unfollow him in seconds because he stands up against racial hate. Apparently, talking about race as a conservative candidate is taboo. You cant mention it PERIOD, even when its slapping you in your face.
Does the GOP want to win in 2012 or become known as party of hate? Ask yourself and change that tune, please! This is exactly what the GOP doesn't need right now. It won't endear voters to us in 2012. Excelsior Herman Cain!
Then my only response is to believe that your thought process is a mile wide and an inch deep. Emotional, not intellectual.
Anyone who abandons Cain over this is just not thinking clearly.
I think you’re right about that. Perry’s a fighter, and from what I’ve seen of how he governs in Texas, I don’t think he’s going to cringe in the corner about being called a name, even the r-name.
Nothing I said blamed Perry for the words that were on the rock.
The muckraking is cutting both ways.....against Perry and against Cain.
I'm objecting to those who fall for either ploy. You just happen to be falling for the anti-Cain part of the leftist race-baiting game.
He was asked by Chris Wallace about it and he replied that it was insensitive but it was not directed at Perry
Yes, but there is so much documentation on this one. So much of what the ‘Rat attack teams do is hints and innuendo—this can be a direct attack, with lots of documentation.
You say not thinking clearly, I say I’ve had enough of people using the race card. I’m not alone.
I’m not falling for a ploy. I’m looking at the words, and I’m not liking what I see. So sue me.
Nice that he says so after it’s all over and the nasty implication has already been made.
But Cain didn't.
It's obviously your choice to dismiss Cain for a few words you didn't like, but you may be throwing away the best candidate for something he clarified and that Perry is not holding against him.
Listen to Cain more often with a more open mind, and less emotional baggage, and you'll find a man who is the polar opposite of what you're accusing him of being.
It's there. Just open your eyes.
What evidence do you have that Herman Cain was lying to Wallace or Hannity about what he really meant when he clarified his words?
Please tell me where I said Cain was lying. I never said that.
"Lying" was perhaps too strong. "Disingenuous" might be a better word.
Kaslin told you that Cain told Wallace that he was talking about the word, not Perry, and you sarcastically implied that he just said it as a CYA.
Correct me where I'm wrong.
He's told both Hannity (in a lengthy interview last night) and Wallace what he meant, and you are implying that he wasn't telling them the truth.
Aren't you?
I liked Cain just fine until I got that unpleasant glimpse into his character.
I did NOT say lie, or disingenuous. You assumed it. What I was saying, or implying, was—too little too late. The damage has been done, in other words. Please don’t put words in my posts that I never typed.
Check out post #108 and see why I’m getting fed up with freeper Texans.
So..
I’m reading all the replies on the thread, and I’m thinking the same thing I’ve always been thinking.
I’m sorry but these candidates are just not going to cut it for a true conservative.
It is not hard to live your life conservatively and to vote or support policy that way. If you are a candidate and you had to compromise even once on a real issue to keep power, then you aren’t fit for office.
I hate the argument no one is perfect. Well true in a personal sense, but politically, yes they are.
There are literally 10’s of thousands of them.
While I certainly don’t support any type of restriction of freedom of speech in regards to the election process, this is what you get when the only people who run need bagillion dollar ‘backers’ or their own fat pockets.
Unfortunately consequence of character by nature.
Thanks for the usual bs ! You don’t disappoint !
Can I correctly assume that you've already decided on somebody else and are looking for excuses to dismiss his or her opponents?
Do you mind if I ask whom you support? Ron Paul?
