From what I've seen, most people wouldn't know the distinction between the two.
Regarding the zune, I'm not surprised. Microsoft has a hard time in any market where they can't leverage their monopoly operating system. The history of Microsoft dead ends is long and glorious.
I bought a Zune and could never make it work right. The software for downloading MP3s was needlessly complex and impossible for me to master. I wound up hating the Zune. My old iPod, by contrast was a dream, the tunes automatically downloaded and organized themselves. The problem was the battery which did not last more than a year. So far the best MP3 player I found are the Sonys. The software is easy, the screens are great, and the sound is better than either the iPod or the Zune.
