Louisiana Hospital to Ban Odor of Smoke on Workers' Clothes
Foxnews ^

Posted on 10/03/2011 6:03:39 PM PDT by Red in Blue PA

Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria will implement an anti-tobacco policy for its entire campus starting July 1 of next year, expanding the policy put in place two years ago for employees of the women's and children's areas.

The Town Talk reports the policy will prohibit the use of tobacco products by employees while on their shifts, including when they are on breaks. It also will not allow employees to work if their clothing smells like smoke.

Goes to show you smack a “whiney” label on anyone who complains about smoke.

Ok, we agree that smoking causes awful damage to the one smoking. We aren’t so different after all. :-)

I think we’d probably both agree that secondhand smoke isn’t any good for the non-smoker being exposed to it. So, if we know that smoking next to an asthmatic or even our healthy family members is harmful, then we’ve crossed the line as to what is a harmful thing that is being inflicted on another.

If someone wants to smoke tobacco, I am fine with that. I truly don’t believe most smokers have any idea what type of health problems they are setting themselves up for, but that isn’t the issue. I am all for smoking, when you aren’t causing harm to others! I am not a smoker, but I generally don’t mind being around cigarette smoke. There are others, however, that find it very irritating, and wouldn’t be as gracious.

Because I have seen adults with COPD and emphysema struggling for breath, and because I’ve seen toddlers admitted dozens of time for asthma (and whose parents continue to smoke in front of them), I do consider smoking a bad thing. Will smoking a few now and then hurt? Probably not. Can it harm those with asthma or those whose respiratory systems are easily irritated? Of course it does. So, should those people NOT be protected from the hundreds of toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke?

>> GOOD!

Maybe eating peanuts and petting animals while on break should be banned as well.

I seriously doubt second-threaded smoke has injured or killed anyone.

I have to agree with you on the perfume and after shave. Some people must bathe in the stuff. There are many people with asthma and allergies who are greatly affected by this.

Does objection or complaint mean being whiney?

You have not earned such a high horse.

You man up.

No more than they should be protected from the toxic chemicals in peaches.

Cyanide, among others, dontchaknow.

You are comparing oranges and apples.

The hospital is banning the 'smell' of smoke. Not actual smoking around the COPD patients and asthmatic chillrun.

Big diff.

If you can't see that. I'll just call you Betty or Wendy. And you can stew in your own juices like some of my family does. ;)

“They don’t have to ask. I don’t smoke around the Bitchin’ Betties. Ever. God forfend. It would be impolite. I stand far off and point and laugh.
But they don’t like that, either.”

I used to live in Cincinnati. Before I moved, smoking was legal in bars and restaurants - they were all packed. I went back to visit and smoking had been outlawed in Ohio bars and restaurants.

So, the smokers went to the Kentucky side of the river where they could smoke while they drank. Did that leave a big crowd of happy, non-smokers in the Cincinnati bars and restaurants? No, they went to join their friends and neighbors in the Ky. bars and restaurants.

Losers = the Cincinnati establishments. Hypocrites = the whiners.

You want to come up and button-hole me with a finger to the chest saying you don't like me smoking around these parts....

That's one thing.

If you're going to whine and sic the gooberment on me because of your passive-aggressive 'issues', that's another.

Tell me you don't like it, I won't do it around you. Just to be polite.

Bitch and whine about it, I'm going to excoriate you until I wheeze my very last gasp.

Just the way I am.

Then why are The Boomers so healthy?

They were born and raised when smoking was rampant.

I never get an answer to this question so maybe you can help.

I never get an answer to this question

Because we get off our ass and do stuff. Even if we smoke like chimbleys(sic) and drink like fishes and eat like coyotes. (not me, another bloke, I'm just quoting)

I live in the Cincinnati area now. I remember there being a worry about how the ban would affect businesses. It turns out that there hasn’t been a significant impact, but that heart attacks have decreased significantly. The bars are still pretty full. Oh, and northern KY has banned smoking in bars and restaurants too. Like I said before, it generally doesn’t bother me, but I have friends who would only go to smoke-free bars (we’d have to go to Ohio).

I don’t know. What would happen if you worked at place where people smoke and then it really began to bother you, health-wise? My mom developed a really bad respiratory reaction to tobacco smoke when she was in her 40’s. Her work place (a church) was smoke free so it wasn’t an issue for her.

Forty years ago I worked the E.R., the majority of us smoked right there in the kiosk smack dab in the middle of that E.R.!

Scrubbed in many times on cases in surgery... and what do you think many of the surgeons, including thoracic M.D.'s did when we finished a pneumonectomy, or whatever... Lit 'em up!

My oh my has the world changed! What a bunch of whiners many of us have evolved into...

Some, anyway. Some of us are throwbacks that irritate all the rest.

Either we'll get old and die, or they will get over it.

My one PC related trip went like this...

HR: You could be terminated

Me: So do it and watch your department fall apart since you know damn well I do most people’s work and am the go to call for sickies/OT on my days off. I can find another job in 5 min so don’t bother threatening me. I don’t give a damn.

HR: Just be more careful.

Me: I’m not changing a damn thing. Fire the whining do-nothings or me. Your choice.

I worked there several more years until most of the business got laid off and that was my last trip to Hr ;)

Doesn't count if the cops weren't called.

But yes, the pushovers back off VERY quickly when they realize reality.

Getting them to reality shouldn't be so painful.

For every person with a genuine medical reaction to smoke, there are literally thousands faking it to get their way. I would love to see the medical reports on all the people ‘claiming’ smoke allergies. Bet they show no such thing.

I am all for courtesy and in fact am not and never have been a smoker. I am also all for non-smokers entering reality and accepting that every molecule of public AND private space/air ect. is not theirs to control. Liberals think it is.

Do you not agree the smoke nazis have taken this BS way to far?

Amazing what 40 years of 24/7 liberal propaganda can do to a people.

And many still claim to be hardcore conservatives while spewing the liberal ‘for the children/health etc’ BS at you.

Some folks really need a good think on just what it is they REALLY believe because their ‘confusion’ on the matter is pretty evident to those of us who already have. And then we hear...

“How dare you question my Conservatism?”

Sadly it gets easier to do every day.
