The killing on Friday of Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen described as a powerful al-Qaeda terrorist, has stirred considerable debate about whether it's appropriate for a president to order an American assassinated.
Evidently, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain shares those concerns.
The above video was recorded just after the first nationally televised GOP presidential debate of the 2012 campaign cycle, held in Greenville South Carolina on May 5 of this year, according to its YouTube page.
"He should be charged. And since he's an American citizen, he should be tried in our courts," Cain said of al-Awlaki. When asked if he considered it legal for President Obama to order al-Awlaki killed, Cain said, "In his case, no, because he's an American citizen."
It has been known since early 2010 that the CIA and the U.S. military's special-operations division maintain kill lists with three to four Americans on them. Al-Awlaki, a U.S.-born cleric, was on the list. He was reportedly killed in Yemen on Friday in a U.S. drone and jet strike. A classified Department of Justice memo authorized the killing, The Washington Post reported.

Thank God, someone else gets it. No one here is saying that AAA shouldn't have been killed, we're all saying that there's already a function of the Constitution that covers cases like this and what Obama did was dangerous in that it ignored the Constitution.
That sounds an awful lot like the "those with nothing to hide won't mind being spied upon" line of thought. It's not paranoia to see where the Leftists in this country are trying to label anyone to the right of Lenin as a terrorist and see the implications of this airstrike.
Due process does not apply to all equally.
For someone, on foreign soil, who has planned and is planning murders of Americans, it is perfectly acceptable to send a missile up his a@@ before Mirandizing him.
And that's regardless of where he happened to have been born or what his accent happens to be.
>>Paranoia is not befitting.
Neither is ignorance of enumerated rights.
I've seen this attitude before, but it's usually held by Democrats, Klansmen and others who believe that our Rights originate from men.
The truth is this. This man was an American, like it or not, and as such he had rights which cannot be waived by only one branch of Government. It was not acceptable to do this without first stripping him of his rights in a court of law, thereby stripping him of his protection as a citizen. That's what the Constitution lays out, that's what is the standard to be met, nothing less. Those who would reject this truth don't deserve the title of "American" and that includes you and all those others in this thread who don't seem to have a problem with violating the Constitution when it benefits you.
Bluntly put, it's people like you who are the reason why we have elected officials who ignore the Constitution and violate our God-given rights day and night. They're just the representatives of the problem, they're not the problem itself and as long as people like you exist, there's no hope of fixing our Republic. We're literally putting a band-aid on a severed artery.
Want to know what's wrong with the United States today? Look in the mirror, you're part of it.
Who is a bigot? Someone who wins an argument with a liberal. You are clearly a liberal. LOL
al-Awlaki deserved a missile up his a##. Deal with it.
I never said he didn't deserve it, I said he shouldn't have had one without his citizenship being revoked in a court of law first you moron.
Pay attention now you slack jawed idiot, this is next part is important.
You cannot just kill American citizens without going through due process, otherwise you don't have a leg to stand on when you cry about your other rights being taken away.
Remember that 2nd Amendment we all love so well? It's just as important as the 5th that you seem to not give a damn about, so when the cops are rounding up your guns like they did in New Orleans after Katrina, I don't want to hear a fucking word out of your mouth because you deserved to have your rights stripped without due process.
When your thoughts are censored because you dared to think like a conservative, keep your fucking mouth shut because you don't give a damn about due process of law and to the victors go the spoils, remember?
When it's your family that's starving because your income's been reduced by a government tax on the "wealthy" to give to those who won't get off their ass and work, just remember that we used to have a Constitution that would have protected your rights but you traded it away so you could wave the flag and jump for joy because an AMERICAN CITIZEN who had turned terrorist was killed without due process.
It's punks like you who don't deserve to be considered an American and I'm going to enjoy watching you squeal about your rights being taken away by those leftists who are in our government now. They're only doing it because you and those like you can't be consistent defending the Constitution, which isn't a Conservative trait but one of a weak minded person.
Real Conservatives don't change their views on a subject because of the situation, but you do so what's that tell us?
Yes, you are a liberal. LOLOLOL
That's your rebuttal? Accusing me of being a Liberal and providing no proof beyond linking back to another of your posts where you accused me of being a liberal, again with no proof? Not touching anything I said, just claiming I'm a liberal because I disagree with your view? It's a weak-minded man who can't define a problem without resorting to labels.
I've shown what should have been done here, by law, and all you've done is call me a liberal. I'm going to love hearing you whine about your rights being taken away, you don't deserve them.
Especially playground name-calling.
No offense, but I can't take you seriously.
You’re wrong....

They’re already picking more people, I’m sure.... I wonder if they’re considering people here? Now do you see why it was wrong to kill Awlaki without trying him in court in absentia or revoking his citizenship?
You’re giving Obama the right to kill YOU.
