Just saw Eric Cantor, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, and Michael Steinhardt, the founder of Birthright Israel, discussing “Are American Values Broken & How Can They Be Fixed?”
They touched on some very profound subjects, such as the preference for self-determination in Jewish teaching, the bias toward life and enjoying life, the conflict between the need for wealth-generation and compassion, whether it is correct to hate the enemies of G-d, and others, and some more political issues—including, of course, Israel. Cantor and Boteach were quite wonderful. There was the obligatory row of loud dissenters but Boteach quieted them down. The rest of the sanctuary was in the Republicans’ hands.
There is no doubt in my mind that the GOP and the Jews belong together.
(The “stolen” business was just an attempt to be funny on Maher’s part; I’m sure he doesn’t really believe people can own other people. If he really thought that, it wouldn’t be funny.)
I love Eric Cantor. I am sorry I had to miss it.
