Which is why the greeters are told to not try to stop them. The workman's comp claim if the employee is injured would probably be much more than the cost of the shoplifted items.

About the safest time to go is early in the morning, say after 7 AM, except for the weekends, or on government check
days. Most of the thugs and thieves aren’t up yet.
Apples and oranges. In Texas, the store owner has a right to put up a sign saying no weapons, and the LAW says that anyone carrying on that property is trespassing.
So, when Wal-Mart puts up a sign saying that they reserve the right to search my property, and the legislature codifies that, as they did with concealed carry, I'll not do business with Wal-Mart again.
Until then, I won't allow them to search my property. Regardless of their internal policy.

They do have a right to ask, but there is no legal obligation to comply. After all, once you purchase something, it's your property.
This same thing happened at a Milwaukee Area Walmart about a year ago.
And they can do that, right up until they bump up against my 4th amendment right to be free from searches without warrant.

Correct.
What bothers me is that I have to pay extra for my purchases to cover losses from internal and external thieves. But I'm not sure there is a solution to that except for the businesses to get serious about determining who is acting bad (and it's not a large number) and working with cops, who need to get serious about stopping those crimes.
Treating everyone like 2nd graders and checking our bookbags doesn't work for me.

Was it another black diversity racist attack?
If they profiled the group most likely to steal from them,
they’d be sued for discrimination.
When I was a night stocker at W-M we were told to check for a receipt if we saw someone with a flat-screen TV in his carriage leaving the store at 2 a.m.
One time the Highway Patrol brought in a couple of guys who had three of 'em in their trunk - with no sales receipts. I dunno why those guys were stopped, but it was probably for more than the "five-finger discount".
One night, around 2 a.m. I just happened to be by the exit when a black guy was headed out. He didn't have anything in his hand but he did a "Threes About" when he saw me. I hung around a few minutes just to bust his chops - and got chewed out for "dawdling". (No greeter on duty at those early hours). The next time, I turned a blind eye - screw 'em - if they want to save a penny and lose a dollar by not having a night-time greeter, that's their problem.
Some kids in Austin took the electronic tags off of video games and put them into tackle boxes in the sporting goods. The guy in front of me happened to have purchased one. It took the security person a while to figure that one out.
Welcome to Wally World! Get your stuff and get our of here!
I don't know what Sam's you are talking about but here they check every receipt, of every customer, every time.
It’s a Black thing, you would’t understand. Toni has other children who also have different last names because she didn’t bother to marry their sperm donors either. On the other hand, maybe the daughter is married. Just thinking out loud. My only hope is that the “greeters” son hears about how this cretin treated his mother.
—I don’t know what Sam’s you are talking about but here they check every receipt, of every customer, every time.—
Yes. They all do. So does costco. The line across the receipt is there as proof. It also keeps you from going back in with the receipt to get the same stuff again...
Somewhat off topic but related to store greeters and it’s Friday and...
I once went to buy an air filter for my furnace/hot air system. I took an old one with me and asked the young kid at the door, “Where are your air filters?”
His jaw dropped and he said, “OMG - what kind of car do you drive?”
Most of the rights described in the constitution and its amendments are meant to protect us against action of the government.
The supreme court has repeatedly ruled as such. That is why private establishments can and do indeed restrict these rights (no weapons, etc) all the time.
See United States vs Jacobsen:
“This Court has ... consistently construed this protection as proscribing only governmental action; it is wholly inapplicable to a search or seizure, even an unreasonable one, effected by a private individual not acting as an agent of the Government or with the participation or knowledge of any governmental official.”
W-M greeters put a little yellow sticker or price tag on your receipt as you enter the store with a return. That gets around the problem you describe.
All this huffing and puffing about illegal search is bull crap. A minor inconvenience at best. Catching the bad guys probably won't "keep prices down" as the store does their B/S routine, but it sends a message to the entitlement crowd that they're not going to get away with it. Good enough for me.
Slavery is illegal/unconstitutional (see the 13th amendment). That does not mean that I can legally enter into a slavery contract with a private party. So even though the constitution’s primary purpose is to define and limit government power, it’s power does extend into the private domain.
