I like it in concept, but would need to see some safeguards against the 9/9/9 becoming 23/12/43 or something.

I doubt there are any, even constitutional ones. Politicians are good at coming out with bizarre new ways to count, and the judicial branch may be mathematically challenged as well.

What is to prevent Congress from raising existing tax rates 20-30-50% right now?

The same political pressures that keep that from happening right now, apply even more so to the 9-9-9 plan

Since everyone pays the 9-9-9 tax it is impossible to demagogue raising it as “making the rich pay their fair share”. Everyone know raising 9-9-9 means they will pay more taxes.

Right now there is more ability to corruptly use the tax code for political ends then there would be under 9-9-9. So the same critical comments being made about 9-9-9 apply MUCH more to the current tax system..

So if 9-9-9 “will not work” based on the standards being applied to it, our current taxsystem is even more unworkable.

Sorry again your critic is based on your feelings about the political class not a rational thoughtful assessments of the merits of Cain's 9-9-9 plan.

The same criticism applies to an even greater extent in the current tax system. 9-9-9 eliminates many of those flaws.

What you want is a perfect system with out any flaws at all. No such thing exists. You are making the perfect the enemy of the good.

By demanding perfection in any replacement tax system you are, in fact, arguing for the maintenance of the status quo since no replacement system will be perfect enough for you.

Again, answer the question.

What stops the current political class from doing that very thing under the existing tax code?

The same political and economic pressure that prevents the Congress from simply hiking tax rates when ever it feels like now, would apply to even a great extent in a 9-9-9 system.

Everyone pays so everyone knows any tax hike means they pay more. Under 9-9-9 the is no more illusion that someone else is paying for your "help" from the Government
