Sometimes, in spite of itself, baseball is perfect.
Ridiculously, stupidly, exhaustingly, thrillingly, Longoria-ly and Papelbon-eously perfect.
Over five hours on a Wednesday night in late September, when baseball was supposed to be quietly ironing its bunting and hoping people soon would be paying attention again, the game willed itself to incomprehensible greatness.
In four games spread over two wild-card races and two time zones, the entrancing narrative not only held the four central protagonists, but peripherally ensnared the two best teams in the regular season, along with two of the worst.

The Cardinals must be thrilled. They get to play three more games this year.
First time in 14 years my O’s have done anything consequential.
I watched a bunch of it last night. The Tampa comeback was as compelling a game as could ever be (and I’m not a Rays fan).
I guess the sad part is that both the Rays and Cards will likely be out of the playoffs after the weekend. Well, at least they got there!
Because my Cincinnati Reds are not in the playoffs...
I am pulling for Tampa and Arizona
Could be a real fun postseason.
Deep down, Red Sox fans MUST have known that once the Yankees took a 7-0 lead into the 8th, the ‘evil empire’,out of spite, would start playing members of the bench warmers from the Bad News Bears in place of the rookie call-ups.
Now batting for Derek Jeter, Timmy Lupus....
One of the greatest stories in the history of our country.

You know you have lost perspective when you think any sports story is one of the greatest stories in our nation’s history.
Qualify with sports story and then we can argue about it. As it stands, your statement is just silly.
It was, without a doubt, the most significant victory for the Baltimore Orioles in a decade and a half (of utter futilty).
The Yankees laid down like dogs. Where was Mariano Rivera - he of the incomparable cutter, the great one, tha all-time saves leader - in the ninth?
The way Boston was playing all Sept...they don’t deserve to be in the playoffs anyways.
Tampa was simply the better team down the stretch.
From your lips to God's ears. - o&t, Phils fan.
To be honest, I was hoping we'd face the Braves, because I think they'd be easier to take at this point.
Oh come on.

how can you say baseball is not connected to current events ?
As a Mariners fan, I can honestly say, "I feel your pain". However, you are one up on me. Yesterday's finale of the Mariner's season was an incredibly boring game between the Mariners and the Oakland A's. Neither one of us being of any consequence since the All Star break.
Pathetic, but expected. Can't own their own failure.
The Cardinals are probably the worst match-up the Phillies could face.
I just hope the Diamondback pitching continues they way they have been. I would love to see their season extended but beating the Brewers in Milwaukee is a tall order.
Would you choose not to given your valuable closer a night off in a meaningless (for the Yankees) game?
