Without getting into the DP itself as an “issue”, the gold standard was prior to FDR taking office. He was in Florida, and some nut job tried to shoot him - while Roosevelt wasn’t injured, the mayor of Chicago, Tony Cermak was severely injured.
Halfway through the trial, Mr. Cermak died. So, in midstream the defendant was charged with murder.
He was captured, arraigned, charged, tried, convicted, and executed.

Wow. When I saw “1978” it occured to me that that was the year my 51 Y.O. brother graduated high school. The system is sick.
