U.S. Sen. Scott Brown today joined a growing chorus of lawmen openly defying Gov. Deval Patrick, calling on federal Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano to allow Massachusetts to join the Secure Communities program without the governors approval.
My constituents have made it abundantly clear to me that they view Secure Communities as an important public safety tool that could have prevented deadly incidents that have rocked their communities, Brown wrote in a letter to Napolitano today. I strongly encourage (the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency) to swiftly and expeditiously activate the remaining jurisdictions in Massachusetts.
Three sheriffs have made an end-run around Patrick in recent weeks, meeting with federal officials in Washington, D.C. to join the program against the governors wishes. The program, run by ICE, allows local law enforcement agencies to share the fingerprints of all arrested people with the feds with the goal being to snare illegal aliens.
Patrick has refused to back the program, arguing that Massachusetts already sends fingerprints to the FBI. He has called the sheriffs actions a publicity stunt. Boston was one of the first cities in the country to implement the program but Mayor Thomas M. Menino withdrew amid reports that people were being deported for minor crimes and misdemeanors. The program is currently being reviewed with federal officials, a Menino spokeswoman said.
The issue has hit a fever pitch after an illegal from Ecuador with an arrest record was charged with drunken driving and vehicular homicide in the dragging death of a 20-year-old man in Milford. This week, a Brazilian illegal was charged with butchering his 24-year-old estranged girlfriend in Marshfield.
Over the past months, several high profile incidents have clearly shown that Secure Communities is needed in Massachusetts now more than ever, Brown wrote in his letter. In these cases, illegal immigrants had been detained by local authorities for criminal violations and were later shown to have extensive criminal histories. If these individuals had been deported following their prior arrests, the lives of at least three people in Massachusetts might have been saved.A Patrick spokesman had no immediate comment on Browns letter.
warren needs some prozac to calm down.
I guess this will be his “one issue” to agree with the GOP on this time so he can try to get reelected.
Boston Globe Aug 27 (kudos to them for using "illegal immigrant"):
>>Governor Deval Patrick said yesterday that he shared the communitys outrage over the death of a 23-year-old Milford man struck last week by an alleged drunk driver who was also an illegal immigrant. But the governor urged people not to blame the death on illegal immigration.
Matthew Denice was on his motorcycle last Saturday when he was hit in Milford and dragged for a quarter-mile. Nicolas Guaman, a 34-year-old immigrant from Ecuador, has pleaded not guilty to charges that include vehicular homicide while under the influence.
Matthew Denice--whose last moments on Earth were spent screaming in horror and pain at being DRAGGED TO DEATH BY AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT
Going by Brown’s campaign website here are some of his stands. How would Warren stand?
>>I believe there are some crimes that are so heinous that they deserve capital punishment. Our Government should have the ability to impose the death penalty in cases where it is justified.
>>I support the Second Amendment and believe that citizens have the right to keep and bear arms as a basic constitutional liberty. I support safe and responsible gun ownership.
>>I am a free enterprise advocate who believes that lower taxes can encourage economic growth. Raising taxes stifles growth, weakens the economy and puts more people out of work. Our economy works best when individuals have more of their income to spend, and businesses have money to invest and add jobs. I have been a fiscal watchdog in the state legislature fighting bigger government, higher taxes and wasteful spending.
>>I recognize that our strength as a nation is built on the immigrant experience in America. I welcome legal immigration to this country. However, we are also a nation of laws and government should not adopt policies that encourage illegal immigration. Providing drivers licenses and in-state tuition to illegal immigrant families will act as a magnet in drawing more people here in violation of the law and it will impose new costs on taxpayers. I oppose amnesty, and I believe we ought to strengthen our border enforcement and institute an employment verification system with penalties for companies that hire illegal immigrants.
>>I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. States should be free to make their own laws in this area, so long as they reflect the people’s will as expressed through them directly, or as expressed through their elected representatives.

You think agreeing with the GOP will help Brown get reelected? Have you ever visited Massachusetts? All those Independents are really just embarassed Democrats but they sure as heck don't often vote for the GOP which they've been taught is just plain evil. It's tribal there.
“Secure communities”?! The idiots of MA have been voting FOR open borders via their horrible voting habits for decades. Now they want secure communities!?
Guess who is up for re election?
Some comments to the Herald article:
>>Now, that’s real leadership. Deval, would you please, please, please get out of the way and Obama too. The two of you alone have ruined this state and the country respectively.
The people can’t take it anymore, no more dead Americans please!
>>I got to tell ya, I love this Senator Brown! He’s the ONLY one in that Lefty state whos actually doing something constructive! Good for you Senator Scott Brown, Good for you! What a freakin loser that Governor Devoid of thought is.... Senator Scott Brown should be getting paid a lot more since he is doing basically two jobs... One as Senator, the other as Governor...
>>I think the libs are getting a bit ascared and afrightened about the common sense, working folks getting fed up with their illegal voter base!!! The only ‘publicity stunt’ I’m aware of was the failed affirmitive action stunt/experiment of installing an extremely unqualified governor here in Mass. and equally unqualified president in D.C. Utter failures.
>>DEMOCRATS STRATEGY: FLOOD AMERICA WITH ILLITERATE, UNSKILLED POOR. THEN GIVE THEM FREE HEALTHCARE, FREE HOUSING, FREE FOOD STAMPS, FREE WELFARE...............
THEN THEY WILL VOTE SOCIALISTIC, I MEAN DEMOCRAT FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS!!!
>>WELL SAID! Liz Warren is expected to receive the Vladimir Lenin Award this year at Harvard. Warren’s speech confirms she has never held a real job her entire life, never had to maek a payroll, answer to a board of directors.
LIZ WARREN, BAWNEY FRANK AND DEVAL SHOULD ALL TAKE A CHARTER PLANE TO MOSCOW. The communists are always looking for a good Marxxxist.
What's wrong with that? If they are here illegally they should be deported.
>>The stepfather of a Milford man who was dragged to death allegedly by a drunken driving Ecuadoran illegal alien with an arrest record wants Gov. Deval Patrick to know he doesnt consider the get-tough policy pushed by Massachusetts sheriffs a publicity stunt, while information emerged late yesterday that a Brazilian arrested Monday in a Marshfield stabbing murder was previously picked up by local police who never notified immigration authorities.
We believe our son would still be alive, Michael Maloney, stepfather of dragging victim Matthew J. Denice, told the Herald outside the familys Milford home yesterday. The Secure Communities program that Patrick rejected is common-sense law enforcement, Maloney said after learning of Patricks dismissal of strict immigration enforcement efforts as a publicity stunt.
If Secure Communities were used, theres a possibility that the prints would have gone back . . . and (immigration authorities) would have said, This guys illegal, lets get rid of him, Maloney said. Anything we can do to save peoples lives is a step in the right direction . . . anything so that Matthews death wasnt in vain.
Primary results, late 2009
Scott Brown: Won 350 towns
Jack E. Robinson: Won 1 town (Heath, MA)
Good luck. You’ll also need someone with a warchest as big as Brown’s.
I want to hear what the Marxist perfessor has to say!
She’s pretty angry with wealthy Americans.
How about illegal alien murderers?
Their very presence here means they’re breaking the law. But if they’re deported, they wouldn’t be able to get a DUI
in front of the Chicken Bone in Framingham...and tell the police to contact their nephew, one B. Hussein Obama, in D.C.
(Uncle Omar is due in court tomorrow I believe)
Meanwhile in Vermont (Shumlin is a D)
>>Gov. Peter Shumlin has added fuel to the fire over this week’s bust of undocumented migrant farm workers by the Vermont State Police.
In an interview with WPTZ-TV’s Stewart Ledbetter yesterday, Shumlin said Vermont should “look the other way” when it comes to dealing with immigrants working illegally on Vermont farms. “We have always had a policy in Vermont where we kind of look the other way as much as we can,” Shumlin told WPTZ. “I just want to make sure that’s what’s we’re doing. [Vermont farms] can’t survive without workers from outside America. It’s just the way it is. “
(”I guess this will be his one issue to agree with the GOP on this time so he can try to get reelected.”)
Thats a false assumption.Scott Brown has always been against illegals even as a state legislator.
Here's a flash for the feds. Illegals are supposed to be deported simply because they are here ILLEGALLY, we are not supposed to wait until they commit a frickin' felony before we send them back. I guess the word illegal has lost it's meaning to the frickin' dimwit party.
