I think W only got in trouble when he faced stiff opposition in congress, notable 2001-3 in the senate, giving us No Child left behind, and after 2007, when the Dems took over and extorted massive social spending to keep Iraq going. If your worried about Mitt, honestly as long as we have strong congressional majorities w/ a tea party bent, he will be just fine.

‘It may be that Barack Obama will do to the Democratic Party what no one, not even Ronald Reagan, could achieve–which is to bring it to its knees.’

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy!

39% of the idiots in this country still support obama. Let me rephrase that. 39% of the voters in this country still support obama and they’re idiots. The sad thing is they’ll always be idiots and they’ll never change their votes.

You forget that their is redistricting this year. Ohio, for example loses 2 congressional districts, both democrat. Most blue states are the same and the Republicans control most of the redistricting. That alone will increase there numbers. Throw in a general hatred for Obummer and the party that gave him to us and a Super Majority in the House is in reach. A Senate majority of 55 plus is almost certain as Dems must protect 23 of 33 Senate seats. This couls lead to a filibusterer proof Senate. Not likely, but certainly possible.

This is the MOST important reason that we MUST get the most Conservative candidate to win the Primaries. He can then push the most Conservative programs and get rid of the awful Obama plans that are killing the economy and the country.

Only a spiritual revival can save us, not elected officials.

A new crop of true statesmen who have the country’s best interest might slow the descent, but we will go the way of empires past.

That’s a sharp analysis, but the results in Weiner’s district show that even hard-core donkey districts can flip given a favorable confluence of events.

Here’s how I see the doomsday scenario for the Dems - not a sure thing by any means, but I think a real possibility.

The GOP runs a credible conservative, with Rubio in the VP slot. The Republican wins, and the pent-up capital sitting on the sidelines leads to an economic boom, giving credibility to congressional candidates running in 2014, continuing momentum towards economic freedom, tax reform and regulatory roll-back (kick real energy exploitation into that mix as well).

The economic climate continues to improve over a second term, but as the inevitable reversal in the economic cycle starts to kick in, and exhaustion with the majority party starts to build-up, Rubio runs for the presidency in 2020. That completely messes up the donkey advantage on the Hispanic vote, and the GOP gets another 4 / 8 years to clean up the current mess.

Assuming of course the stupid party doesn’t return to form.

“Even if the Dem party is destroyed, we are still left with the 40% of voters who think Obama, and others like him, ought to be re-elected”

For now. With the exception of black single mothers, the group is aborting themselves out of existence. There are far more liberal DINKs the conservative DINKs. (dual income no kids) Most bitter singles are also libs, in my un-scientific personal experience.

I haven't done any kind of analysis of individual congressional districts. I have no idea how many seats might be at risk for the Dems in what is likely to be a very bad cycle for them. I'm confident they'll lose some, but we'll have to get a little closer to get a feel for how many. Looking at Republican swing districts doesn't help much.

In the long run, the Dems may fade, or they may adapt to the new post-progressive era. If the GOP is too timid the Dems might even have a resurgence in 2014 making the case that conservatism has failed and it's time for a return to the old time, left-wing religion.

The bottom line is that the Dems aren't beaten yet and, as an original component of the two party system, they won't be easy to beat. The Dem Party as an institution will take whatever form it has to take to thrive. It will exploit any opening the GOP leaves open to it. I don't anticipate living to see it on a slab with a stake through it's heart.

I agree, they may be down but are not out. That being said, the Republicans winderred the wilderness for forty years in a row. They may be able to make the Democrats insignificant in the house for a decade or two. That will give us an oprotunity to stop and even reverse some of the insanity of the past eighty years.

That’s the best case scenario, and it’s good enough for me.
