The Cain Mutiny
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 9-28-11 | Dorothy Rabinowitz

The pundits busy divining the reasons Herman Cain won that Florida straw poll so handily can't be blamed—it was a compelling spectacle and a distinctly satisfying one as straw poll results go.To have listened to the candidate's prescriptions in his speech to the delegates Saturday was to see why. Everything he told the audience had been said, in one way or another, by most of the leading Republican candidates.

The difference here was -- is -- Mr. Cain's unfailing capacity to speak as though from a core of fire deep inside him. An irresistible strength -- as is the mordant humor he brings to the battle. ..So it happens that he can deliver a steely jibe about defense cuts ("You don't put a bulls-eye on the backs of our men and women in uniform") or the way America's wars must be fought ("the mission is victory . . . If we are not in it to win it, we will not be in it") and make audiences feel they'd never heard anything so bracing.

This is no small achievement. And it's why the conventional explanation of the straw poll results -- that it was all about the Republicans' dissatisfaction with the current crop of candidates -- seems inadequate.

It would be far closer to the truth to say that those straw poll delegates were responding to a voice whose fire had touched them, warmed them, spoken for them. An early response to the Florida poll results came from a friend, historian Alan C. Kors, who observed

I agree. Right now I think Cain is the best candidate and I would be very happy to vote for him. I think he has been underestimated. He’s very smart and has great leadership qualities.

Well it really depends on what we are talking about, but for me I rather my state legislature decide things like:

Should a convicted felon be allowed to own a gun?
Should crimial possion of a gun on the grounds of a school or other public facility be an aggravated circumstance.
How close to a private dwelling should a person be allowed to dischange a firearm?
Should a person with a history of mental illness be allowed to own or buy guns?

And I can think of a plenty of others I bet even you can.

For me personally as I said I rather have the local legislature decide things like this. If they are wrong I have a far better and greater chance of getting it set right locally, than having to deal with Washington. And even if that doesn’t work one can always go to the Supreme Court as gun rights activist did in Chicago and Washington DC.

"He’s a fast study, for sure. A very bright man."

That is what caught my eye. At first I thought of him as a decent hard-working guy with a pleasing flourish with words, but not a truly serious candidate, kind of over his head.

But every time I see him, he seems more and more on top of things. He's improving every day (which is the story of his life). He IS a quick study and understands thoroughly the basic principles of leadership.

He will need to team up with someone who knows the Byzantine inner workings of the political process, but Cain seems like EXACTLY the guy who understands that and will make sure he gets the right people for that function. Sarah's fade will be Cain's gain.

There was another alternative plan that did not have a $700 billion price tag and no sweeteners, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would not allow it to even be introduced, debated or discussed. The alternative plan was based on unleashing cash stuck in other countries because of income tax rules, and cash stuck in investment capital accounts because of capital gains taxes.

The alternative plan was developed by the Republican Study Committee in the House of Representatives .

Obviously, Speaker Pelosi’s problem with the alternative was that it was a Republican proposal. Surprise, surprise!

Exactly. It’s not the call of the federal govt.

Oh Geeeez, where do I start?

The Founding Fathers said that the “states” can not take away inalienable rights!!!!!!

Period!!!!

The states can not take away womens right to vote, nor the right of free speech, not can the states take away guns, nor can the states bring back slavery.

Also, if Cain is elected, then you can forget about National Reciprocity.

You can also forget about owning a gun in any state in the future which has a large number of Democrat voters because Cain will not interfere.

Lastly, the United States Supreme Court is just 1 judge away from determining that individual citizens are not allowed to own, possess, or carry guns.

Do you think a mental patient show own a gun? How about a convicted felon? Who better to determine what the law should be in such case than the State legislatures?

YOU LIE

Herman Cain is 200% pro 2nd Amendment. What he said in the Blitzer interview (mentioned on that link you posted) was taken to mean that he believed states could overrule the 2nd amendment. He does not believe that and he explains here:

(at the 10:17 mark) I strongly support the 2nd amendment. I said that some things should be left up to the states, for example, if the states want to require background checks, let the states decide that. But I did not in ANY WAY mean states had a right to restrict access to owning firearms. So that was the misunderstanding.

Not so! And, even if it was, that would make the win even more remarkable!

Cain IS able!

Thanks for posting this. Dorothy Rabinowitz is the real deal. Glad she giving Herman Cain prominence in the WSJ. From the article:

"The difference here was -- is -- Mr. Cain's unfailing capacity to speak as though from a core of fire deep inside him. An irresistible strength -- as is the mordant* humor he brings to the battle."

What the GOP needs in 2012 is an authentic conservative (core of fire deep inside) who can boldly, clearly and incisively articulate the conservative vision.

Herman CAiN, in every way. He's the best of the current field.

* biting and caustic in thought, manner, or style; incisive

The state is the east coast branch of California. ................... Bull Crap! Maybe on the south east coast where the Liberal NY’ers go and manage to vote in 2 states. There are other roads that come down to FL besides I 95. Many ex career military reside here too. There may be some pockets of heavy Dem voters, but I would not compare Florida to CA. Allan West won in a heavy Lib area, and he’ll probably get re elected. One thing we have in common with CA is we also have a west coast.

I saw an interview with Cain on YouTube (can’t find t right now) where he explained the tarp thing.

In the first few days, *everybody* agreed with tarp. (Including Glenn Beck) Once the details started coming out, the alarm went out. At that time, Cain changed his position.

You wrote:

“Although Cain says he supports the Second Amendment, in the next breath he says he *fully* supports *any and all* state gun control/prohibitions.”

In contrast stand the facts of what he actually said, in context:

BLITZER: All right. Let’s talk about gun control. Do you support any gun control?

CAIN: I support the Second Amendment.

BLITZER: So you don’t — so what’s the answer on gun control?

CAIN: The answer on gun control is I support strong — strongly support the Second Amendment. I don’t support, you know, onerous legislation that’s going to restrict people’s rights in order to be able to protect themselves as guaranteed by the Second Amendment.

BLITZER: Should states or local governments be allowed to control the gun situation? Or should...

CAIN: Yes.

BLITZER: The answer is yes?

CAIN: The answer is yes. That should be a state’s decision.
