DEARBORN, Mich. -- Ford's turnaround over the last five years has resulted in big profits and won its CEO a reputation for brilliant management.
But those same achievements are stirring resentment among many of its factory workers. And that is complicating contract talks between the company and its union employees.
GM and Chrysler needed government bailouts and bankruptcy protection to stay in business, but Ford took billions in private loans and endured on its own.
As a result, Ford became a consumer favorite and the company prospered. It paid Mulally for engineering the turnaround and restored merit pay and some other benefits for white-collar workers, angering union members.
"The compensation for the CEO has been widely publicized, and those kinds of things wend their way up and down the assembly line," says Harley Shaiken, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley and a specialist in labor issues. "It creates higher expectations."
Ford compensation records obtained by The Associated Press shows that UAW-represented hourly workers have seen larger increases in pay and benefits over the last decade than many white-collar workers.

Like many others, I already have decided that I will never buy a GM or Chrysler product, but I do own two Fords. Ford should know that it would not take much to push me toward dumping the Fords for a made-in-Texas Toyota Tundra and a made-in-Ohio Honda Accord.
Make a good product
Make a good profit
Do so without Government
And the unions will be pissed off...................
My brother just purchased a new F-250 last night. I’m planning on getting a Tundra in the next couple of weeks. I won’t even consider a GM - this pisses off my cousin who is a union member.
I won't rent one, either. Avis tried to give me a GM car last time I rented and I refused.

Congratulations to your brother. My son and husband just purchased a used Ford pick up (older model but really low mileage). It will be the “family” utility vehicle AND my son’s first vehicle. (I type that with my hands completely shaking).
That reminds me of my first vehicle - a 1964 Ford F-100 truck. I wish your son many good years behind the wheel. I miss that first truck - wish I still had it.
We initially looked at the Ranger and it seemed too small for our liking. If you could have seen his fACE light up when he sat behind the wheel, you would have laughed. Plenty of leg room/head room (since he is six one and still growing). Plus, I like the size... more metal around him.
Or, for that matter, how much the White Collars at The UAW make.

That is so funny you said that! He was actually wondering about a job of taking junk to the dump. For example, when people do a cleaning before the sale of a home or just have too much old stuff (and they own a small car or don’t have the energy/time). Most businesses charge an arm and a leg for such a service. He was thinking of a reasonable price... making him stand out. I will let him know about the lawn care business as well!

I have read of the Posters buying of a new Ford F-250 and I think it’s great that he bought one. A friend of mine just purchased a Ford F-250 with Diesel engine, He paid $58,000 dollars for it.
That is more than I make in a year.
I am afraid I will never own one , too rich for my pocketbook.
The Repubs currently control the Michigan state government. I would love it if they passed Right-to-Work.
Is it Conservatively Correct to buy or rent a Chrysler vehicle?
That make me think of what my sister told me a couple of weekends ago. My older sister had some work done on the house we grew up in - way back in the 50s - 70s. The work was done by two 80+ yr old carpenters I worked for in the late 60s. One still drives a 1964 Chevy pickup he bought new in 1964.
Liberal Hollywood is probably pushing GM in return for some governmental perk: for example, all the Californian agents on the show The Mentalist drive GM trucks. The hype and insincerity of GM’s latest Detroit commercial for one of their cars is nauseating and part of the larger problem — the same as Obama’s problem — in thinking the general population is really stupid and gullible.
When will I consider buying GM or Chrysler?
After they’ve paid back the loan they forced me to cover without my permission. The bailout was $51 billion. That’s about $700 per family.
And I have NOT received my check.
