The sad thing is that he opposes a federal version of in-state tuition for illegals, so he’s in agreement with the 86% that oppose the Dream act. So he’s actually skewering himself by attacking poeple he largely would agree with as President.

His opposition is based on his defense of the 10th Amendment, IIRC, not on the merits of the act itself. He's faced this seeming paradox on several matters, including abortion and gay marriage. On balance, I would prefer a President who respects states rights and is very reluctant to support any federal mandate.

That's a big deal for me as well. Frankly, even if I thought he really DID support everything people accuse him of, I wouldn't be worried, because he has a strong foundation of 10th-amendment respect, and that would prevent him from acting badly as President. Add that to all the things nobody will EVER attack him for, and he is a solid choice to BE president, if he can just WIN the election. The major issues of our day, in what i think is a reasonable order: The debt. The economy. Jobs. Obamacare. Entitlements eating up our budget. Federal government controlling people's lives and usurping the authority of the states. Exploiting our vast energy resources. Picking conservative justices to stop the liberal tide of unconstitutional behavior. Abortion. A tax code that picks winners and losers. A system overwhelmed by illegal immigrants. Gay marriage.

Of that list, the only thing Perry is weak on is illegal immigrants, one of the lowest. And the other things he is attacked for aren't even on the radar. Nobody is concerned about some newfangled federal vaccine program popping up. Only a minority really think we should ban Mosques, and deport all muslims. And not too many conservatives REALLY want to implement a new stricter campaign finance reform to prevent people from donating money to candidates who do things they support. And his other negatives are electability issues. He doesn't seem to be a good debater. He comes across somewhat stiff (my daughter called him a Cylon when we saw him in person -- that might have been his back acting up). He uses stupid language to defend his positions. I've read his book, and it's full of conservative goodness. I understand the objection to a few of his policies, but I think there is much more than simple disregard for him in a lot of the attacks.
