Some fraternity brothers at the University of Iowa are practicing walking in high heels as they prepare for a march to speak out against sexual assault.
The first local Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is set for Saturday in Iowa City. More than 100 people are expected to participate in the event, which was brought to campus by the Greek community and sponsored by UI Student Government and Coca-Cola.
While the march is open to women, only men will be wearing high heels as a symbolic way to show support for women...

You’re just sad.
I’m sorry... I thought you were asking me how much money I raised. Wasn’t that the “point of the effort”?
Or do you not expect such a common-sense answer?
If these guys want to raise money for rape crisis centers, they could have donated their time and labor and done something truly useful. And modest, too, if they don’t stand on the street corner and beat their chests about what a wonderful thing they did.
But that’s not REALLY the point after all, is it? No, it’s all about this mythical “awareness”, which is the standard liberal clap-trap used to address a problem rather than actually dealing with it. It makes people feel good to “raise awareness” when in reality I doubt “awareness” has ever stopped one rape.
So, raising money is really secondary. The real point is being “shocking” or “outrageous” to get the media attention for “awareness”.
Pointless narcissism, in my book. You want to help, then help. Be useful, be productive. Do something that actually works.
My younger son participated in the “Safe Walks” program at his university, which was a stone’s throw from some rough urban neighborhoods. He’d be on call to provide escort upon request to women walking on the campus at night.
He’s never admitted to any use of high heels, though.
;^)
You’re a little too happy.
productive work vs. college prank... hmmm... don;t really need me as an arbiter of which is which. You think your bake sale got a lot of discussion nationwide on internet forums?
Ah, there's the rub, isn't it. How many rapes has "awareness" ever prevented?
You know, the ‘my way or the highway’ attitude around here really pisses me off sometimes. Here we have young college men taking a stance on something positive...something that actually raises money and awareness about a social problem...and all some can do is bash.
I hope you never wander into New Orleans in February. Your precious little head might explode.

by the same token, how many sold cupcakes or mowed lawns have prevented rape?
both activities raised money. why is your method productive and the other not, when they both got to the same end?
"Really, officer, we're marching to speak out against sexual assault. Yeah. That's the ticket."
Ponder this. Has the explosion of sexual perversion in recent decades made women more safe, or less safe?
You mean like saying things like "So how much have you raised?" as a form of response to critique? I agree.

I've already discussed the fallacy of "awareness". They raised money for a good cause -- great! The method they used? Not so much. It's a sop to the gay movement to have men dress up as women, even as a stunt. So no, I don't like it, and I have every right to say that. Without comments like the above or "I hope you never wander into New Orleans in February. Your precious little head might explode." thrown at me.
Non-sequiter. There’s the money aspect, which as you point out doesn’t matter where the money comes from.
But “awareness” itself is a liberal folly.
You’re right, these guys could have done any of a thousand things to raise money.
Apparently, though, only kevkrom approved methods will be commented on positively. All other, unapproved, methods will be met with amateurish psychological profiling.
These guys raised money, just as you did. Care to comment (wtih common sense) on that outcome?
And yet they chose to give aid and comfort to the gay agenda by participating in a freak show. All in the name of "awareness" of course.
They could have done any number of things, but chose this. I'm not allowed to critique their choice?
These guys raised money, just as you did. Care to comment (wtih common sense) on that outcome?
I have. Repeatedly. Hooray for raising money for a good cause. Boo for acting like "gay pride" parade participants.
There are many ways to make money. “Act Out” seems to like this one, which to me is not a good sign.
that is one fraternity that no father or mother should let her son anywhere near.
Girls, and this can’t be stressed enough, never ever date a male from that frat.
You’re right. I give up. They just should have stayed at the frat house and had a kegger instead.
What a sad thread...glad I’m done with it.
Real men wear kilts....speaking of which Joe do you have that pic?????? You know the one I mean too!!!
Agreed.
You could argue that millions, maybe billions of rapes have been prevented by “awareness” through the years.
Stopping rape is as much about changing the mindset of people who commit is as it is about arming people.
Sure, you can argue that. But can you prove it? No matter how much you want to believe that, there is no evidence that "awareness" has made one bit of difference.
